SCSI hard drives SATA hard drives

IBM SCSI hard disk drives (HDDs) help you improve the transaction and cost performance of your IBM eServer xSeries server. Your HDD choice can be a critical component in maximizing the I/O throughput of your system. No matter what your needs are, IBM provides the scalability in HDD offerings to complement your system.

RPM: Choosing between 15,000 and 10,000 RPM HDDs
The capacity minimum for hard disc drives has multiplied over recent years. In order to maintain acceptable response times and keep pace with the additional data stored on each drive, changing from 10K to 15K HDDs enable xSeries servers to deliver up to 30% more performance. External storage realizes this same performance benefit, requiring fewer 15K drives to meet performance and capacity needs (see white paper), significantly lowering customers’ TCO.

15K HDDs have three field-proven generations of reliability, decrease RAID rebuild times, and have similar or lower power and cooling requirements, acoustics, and rotational vibration compared to 10K rpm HDDs. 10K drives are a better fit where data is accessed less often.
