IBM eServer Briefing Centers - Böblingen, Germany

IBM Deutschland Entwicklung GmbH in Böblingen is one of IBM's largest development centers outside of the United States. Ever since it was founded in 1953, software, hardware and services have taken shape in the "greenfield think tank" within the framework of cross-enterprise division of labor.

At IBM's Böblingen development center, experts work on strategically important technologies and solutions for the on demand world. This is where development competences in the areas of on demand technologies, on demand infrastructure, provisioning and automation are bundled. Products and solutions for a flexible and dynamic in-company IT infrastructure take shape, such as Tivoli Systems Automation, IBM Dynamic Infrastructure or the IBM Virtualization Engine.

Along with developing the IBM System z, the world's securest and most reliable server for enterprise-critical data transactions, the Böblingen specialists hold worldwide responsibility for Linux and virtualization in connection with System z, systems management for mainframes, the IBM VSE/ESA operating system and the WBI-FN financial transaction system.

At the German IBM development center products take shape for the IBM WebSphere middleware family that enables enterprises to set up a stable IT infrastructure and digitalize their business processes. They include above all developments for the business integration sector, WebSphere Portal and WebSphere Pervasive Software for Mobile eCommerce, and voice-operated solutions. Components for the business intelligence, content management, information integration and database tools segments are developed for the DB2 database product portfolio. Technologies for enterprise search, data mining and archiving of e-mails and data and other uses also originate in Böblingen. Other core competences in the software development service range are voice recognition technologies and industry-specific products and solutions for the bioinformatics, automotive and finance sectors.

The hardware division is a world leader in the development of high-end servers. Its teams develop amongst other novel work the S/390 architecture-based system design for the IBM System z mainframe family. Technologies for other IBM System platforms such as the IBM System i and IBM System p also originate in Böblingen. The development of firmware, microprocessors and microcontrollers, peripheral connections and multilayer ceramics for chip carriers are further focal points of the Böblingen specialists' work. Customized chips that are market leaders for quality are designed for customers at an ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) design center. Böblingen took part in the development of IBM's PowerPC 970FX 64-bit chip that is among the fastest in its class and powers the IBM JS20 Blade Center and the Apple G5. As part of ongoing cooperation since 2001 between Sony, Toshiba and IBM, the Böblingen team is involved in developing the Cell processor, a "supercomputer on a chip" that is also based on PowerPC technology. Its application spectrum ranges from highly complex graphics to scientific applications that require enormous processing power.

With its worldwide responsibility for the architecture, design and implementation of Linux and virtualization on IBM System z servers, the Böblingen development center is the largest Linux laboratory in the world. It also holds worldwide responsibility for Linux systems management on all IBM platforms. With the z/VSE mission the experts support customer-based solutions, thereby making constant IBM Systems growth possible.

IBM's Technical Marketing Competence Center Europe (TMCC Europe) at the IBM Development Center is the link between the technical sales team and development. Latest developments can be demonstrated in a timely manner and shown graphically. The TMCC offers customers on the spot advice, from planning to implementation of their infrastructure.
