PM for Power Systems data collector integrated into AIX (PM AIX Collection Agent)
AIX now includes an integrated performance data collector in support of Performance Management (PM) for Power Systems. As an extension of the TOPAS data collector function, this agent automatically collects non-proprietary utilization and growth data at a server or partition level. At the user’s option initiated via a SMIT panel, the collected data is automatically transmitted to and retained at IBM through the installation and activation of IBM’s Electronic Service Agent either standalone or on Hardware Management Console (HMC).
The integrated PM AIX Collection Agent function is supported in AIX V6.1 TL 4 and AIX V5.3 TL 11 beginning October 23, 2009. (Support is planned for AIX V6.1 TL 3 and AIX V5.3 TL 9 and 10 in second quarter 2010.)
Note: If you had originally installed the original PM Collector (pmaix.rte), then additional setup is requires such as entering customer information and Enabled Data Transmission.

Announcing Performance Management for Power Systems Support for IBM POWER processor-based Blades
On July 13, 2009 IBM Performance Management for Power Systems has enhanced its capabilities to include support for IBM POWER processor-based Blades running IBM i and/or AIX operating systems. Clients can take advantage of reports and graphs that show historical usage and growth of their IBM POWER processor-based Blades. Using PM for Power Systems along with the IBM Systems Workload Estimator clients can easily determine when an upgrade is needed.
PM for Power Systems will support the following IBM POWER processor-based Blades:
- BladeCenter JS12
- BladeCenter JS22
- BladeCenter JS23
- BladeCenter JS43
- IBM i Edition Express for BladeCenter S
PM for Power Systems does not support x86 Blades.
Announcing AIX RunQ changes
On March 7, 2009 the AIX RunQ information for all servers has been reprocessed. For more information, please refer to the AIX FAQ.
Announcing PM for Power Systems
PM for Power Systems is the new umbrella name incorporating all the functions of PM for System i and PM for System p. PM for Power Systems is put in place to support all the former models of the IBM System i™ and the IBM System p™ family of systems and all the new IBM Power™ Systems models. Consistent reporting formats exist whether you are running the IBM i or AIX®; and consistent terms and conditions apply across both operating systems. And in all cases, users still have access to the IBM Systems Workload Estimator for sizing upgrades, server consolidations, partition additions, etc., that are based on the collection of historical utilization and growth data provided by PM for System i or PM for System p.
Support by model type and software release
PM for Power Systems provides support for current releases of IBM i and AIX and the hardware models they run on until the release goes to the 'End of Program Support' date.
Note: PM for Power Systems supports IBM POWER processor-based Blades running AIX and IBM i; however, it does not support x86 Blades. IBM System p5 575 rack type 9118 and IBM Power 575 Model F2A rack type 9125 are also not supported.
PM for Power Systems will attempt to process data sent from non-supported releases of IBM i and AIX 5.1 on an AS-IS basis but no guarantee is implied. Please refer to the following for a complete list of End of Program Support Dates by operating system:
PM for Power System SNA transmission migration
SNA as a communication protocol has been withdrawn as a method to transmit PM for Power Systems data - System i performance data. Please see the following link (PDF, 34KB) for key dates and information on the recommendation of using Electronic Service Agent for transmitting PM for System i performance data.
Recommended audio visual clips
To better increase the interactive capability and how to navigate the components of the PM for Power Systems offering, new audiovisual clips have been added for four different topics. They are:
- The Navigation function
- Explaining the levels of service functions - no charge versus full service
- Reporting different levels of resource usage (monthly, daily, hourly)
- PM for Power Systems interfacing with IBM Systems Workload Estimator
