Operating system requirements

Before you can begin using PM for Power Systems, there are certain operating system requirements that you may need to install before you can activate PM for Power Systems. Please refer to the following sections:

PM for Power Systems Requirements for IBM i
PM for Power Systems Requirements for AIX V6.1 TL 3, 4 and AIX V5.3 TL 9, 10, 11*
PM for Power Systems Requirements for AIX V6.1 TL2, AIX 5.3 TL8 and prior releases (pmaix.rte)

* Support is planned for AIX V6.1 TL 3 and AIX V5.3 TL 9 and 10 in second quarter 2010.

Once you have all the necessary requirements you can activate PM for Power Systems collections.

PM for Power Systems requirements for IBM i

PM for Power Systems requires your System i, or AS/400 OS/400 release must be a version that has not reached its end of support date. Please refer to the following for a complete list of End of Program Support Date.

The data collection code for detailed PM for Power Systems is already integrated into i5/operating system and no other installation is required.

For more information, please refer to the IBM Software Technical Document: How to Send PM Agent Data on Supported i5/OS Releases.

NOTE: SNA as a communication protocol has been withdrawn as a method to transmit PM for Power Systems - System i performance data. Please see the following link for key dates and information on the recommendation of using Electronic Service Agent for transmitting PM for System i performance data.

PM for Power Systems Requirements for AIX

AIX V6.1 TL 3, 4 and AIX V5.3 TL 9, 10, 11

A new PM AIX Collection Agent is now integrated within the AIX operating systems starting with AIX V6.1 TL 3, 4 and AIX V5.3 TL 9, 10, 11. (Support is planned for AIX V6.1 TL 3 and AIX V5.3 TL 9 and 10 in second quarter 2010.)

A performance recoding will automatically be started once you reboot your server. You will still need to activate the Electronic Service Agent and PM AIX Collection Agent before your performance data will be sent to IBM.

The person configuring Electronic Service Agent and PM AIX Collection Agent on each client system must have root authority for the system. For more information on ESA and PM AIX Collection Agent activation, please refer to the following:

AIX V6.1 TL2, AIX 5.3 TL 8 and prior releases (pmaix.rte)

It is recommended that you upgrade your operating system to AIX V6.1 TL 3, 4 or AIX V5.3 TL 9, 10, 11 to take advantage of the integrated PM AIX Collection Agent. (Support is planned for AIX V6.1 TL 3 and AIX V5.3 TL 9 and 10 in second quarter 2010.)

NOTE: If you have upgraded your operating system, you will not be allowed to install the pmaix.rte fileset that is mentioned below.

In order to use PM for Power Systems on your AIX system, you must be running AIX 5.2 or higher for the LPAR environment. You will also need to install and activate the Electronic Service Agent and PM for Power System (Collection Agent).

To install this service, there are security requirements and various minimum hardware and software requirements. After Electronic Service Agent and PM for Power Systems (Collection Agent) is installed and running you may want to keep in mind other optional requirements and space considerations as you make changes to your hardware environment.

The person installing Electronic Service Agent and PM for Power Systems (Collection Agent) on each client system must have root authority for the system. After installation, the tasks run throughout the day to collect data and transport to IBM will be entered into the crontab list for the root user.

NOTE: If you have AIX V5.3 TL6 or higher; the Electronic Service Agent is already installed. You will still need to install the Collection Agent.

For additional information:

Electronic Service Agent
Electronic Service Agent is bundled with AIX V5.3 TL6 or higher and no further installation is required. You will still need to install PM for Power Systems (Collection Agent). For additional information about Electronic Service Agent, please refer to the following:

To install Electronic Service Agent on AIX V5.2, you will need the following:

The most current version of Electronic Service Agent code can be obtained by anonymous download from the AIX FTP site and directory.

PM for Power Systems (Collection Agent)
As of January 1, 2008, all AIX partitions must now be using the most current PM for Power Systems Collection Agent (6.0.6.0). The most current version of PM for Power Systems client code can be obtained by anonymous download from the AIX FTP site. For additional information, please refer to the PM for Power Systems (Collection Agent) for AIX (README) for a complete list of required file sets.

Disk space*: On each client system, the minimum space requirements are 2MB free in /usr, 4MB free in /var, 4MB free in /tmp, and less than 1MB in /home.

* These are minimum requirements for disk space for typical systems. If your systems have a large number of resources, like disks, additional disk space will be required in the /var filesystem to accommodate proportionately larger collection files.
