PowerVC™ is the new advanced virtualization management offering, built on OpenStack, that delivers advanced virtualization management for IBM® AIX® and Linux environments on IBM POWER® Systems. PowerVC has quick time to value and low total cost of ownership, as the focus of this offering is simplicity and ease of use. IBM Power Systems servers coupled with PowerVC technology are designed to help clients dynamically build an infrastructure that’s supports a Software Defined Environment or a Cloud infrastructure.
PowerVC enables Power Systems customers to lower their Total Cost of Ownership with simplified ease of use and capabilities, easily deploy and move workloads and maximize resource utilization. PowerVC has been built to require little to no training to get moving on optimizing your power system virtualization, with advanced placement policies and monitoring and management of VMs.
PowerVC has the capability to manage the existing infrastructure by automatically capturing the following information necessary for management:
1. Existing host/hypervisor configuration, including VIOS partition information
2. The CPU, Memory and I/O settings for the existing virtual machine definitions in a Power host
3. The existing volume definitions in the supported Storage Controllers
4. The existing zoning information in the supported SAN switches
PowerVC allows clients to capture and manage a library of VM images, thus enabling IT managers to quickly deploy a virtual machine environment by launching a stored image of that environment (instead of having to manually recreate a particular environment). By saving virtual images, and by centralizing image management, IT managers and administrators can migrate and move virtual images to available systems—and then quickly deploy applications on those images.
PowerVC allows IT managers and administrators to create groups of resources that are needed to support workloads. These groups of resources can then be quickly leveraged to support workload demands to increase utilization and lower administrative costs, while making IT more nimble it react to business needs and market trends in supporting the business.
The architecture of PowerVC is built upon the OpenStack framework. IBM continues to extend the OpenStack base offering by providing a new user interface and IBM specific OpenStack drivers to Power Systems management interfaces like the HMC (Hardware Management Console) and IVM (Integrated Virtualization Manager) plus scheduling capabilities.
PowerVC will be available in two editions, IBM PowerVC Express edition and IBM PowerVC Standard edition. The express edition will be offered to manage systems that are currently using IVM which tend to be small tier servers. The standard edition will be offered to manage systems that are currently being controlled by the HMC.
Additionally PowerVC offers the following value to clients:
