Systems management

For managing and maintaining your operating system configuration, the AIX® operating system offers a number of choices, from the command line and menu-driven System Management Interface Tool (SMIT), to a variety of remote management solutions such as the IBM Systems Director Console for AIX (Console) and the Web-based System Manager. The Console can provide highly scalable, multiple host tool for administering the AIX operating system.

The Workload Manager provides a policy based approach to managing the resource utilization of applications running inside of the AIX operating system. The Workload Manager has been part of AIX since Version 4.3.3.

With the addition of PowerVM™ Workload Partitions (WPAR) in AIX 6.1, a new licensed program product, the IBM PowerVM Workload Partitions Manager™ for AIX (WPAR Manager) is now available to facilitate management of WPARs on multiple systems. With the WPAR Manager, you can create, clone, start, stop and monitor WPARs on multiple systems from a single interface.

The WPAR Manager also enables PowerVM Live Application Mobility, which allows you to move a WPAR from one system to another without restarting the application. Live Application Mobility is designed to reduce application downtime, improve workload balancing across systems and provide energy savings by moving workload off of an underutilized system and then shutting it down.

IBM Management Edition for AIX is an integrated systems management offering created specifically for the AIX / Power™ Systems platform that provides cross system monitoring and discovery of AIX and Power Systems components including AIX, Power Systems hardware central electronics complex (CEC), PowerVM Virtual I/O Server, Hardware Management Console (HMC) and other System p components.
