IBM AIX

UNIX on Power Systems including System p

One of the most critical decision points in business computing today is total cost of ownership. Many organizations discover that the systems they count on to run their business cost a lot more to run than anticipated. The AIX® operating system (OS) can help lower the total cost of ownership by providing enhanced systems and network management capabilities that help put you in control of your computing environment.

IBM is a long-time leader in UNIX® systems management. The AIX OS offered the first menu based systems management tool, SMIT in AIX version 3. IBM continued to deliver innovations such as the first UNIX point-and-click management tool, Web-based Systems Manager with AIX Version 4.

AIX includes a systems management interface called the IBM Systems Director Console for AIX (Console). The Console provides a federated, Web-browser-based interface to SMIT, Web-based System Manager and new tools such as the Distributed Command Execution Manager (DCEM). The new, fast performing tools allows administrators to manage the AIX OS via a Web-browser, transforming a complex process into a series of simple tasks. Whether you're in a remote office at 8 am or home at 8 pm, this permits you to perform most AIX system management tasks over the Web. In addition, the Console can automatically guide you through complex management tasks and which can help reduce training and staffing costs.

As the name suggests, the Console is designed to integrate with the IBM Systems Director, IBM's strategy platform management tool. The Console does not prerequisite the Systems Director, but it is based on the same underlying technology — which can reduce training costs by providing a similar user interface.

IBM solutions that combine IBM Tivoli® systems management software and IBM Systems can help you. With these integrated solutions, you can immediately address the heightened and growing need for a highly secure, on demand operating environment. Some of Tivoli products that exploit AIX capabilities include the IBM Tivoli Monitoring and the IBM Tivoli Usage and Accounting Manager.

Tivoli security management software such as IBM Tivoli Access Manager, can help meet your compliance requirements, control access, manage identities and much more.
