Get the facts

Move up to IBM Power Systems

Get the facts. Hear it from us. IBM responds to competitors’ claims.

Tab navigation

It can be hard to tell facts from "spin" when new and old competitors alike make grand claims against IBM Power Systems™ because we're recognized as a technological leader in the market. This "Get the facts" Q&A series provides our fact-based response to these competitors' claims. We aim to keep you informed of key platform considerations such as reliability, efficiency, and total cost of ownership.

Power Systems

IBM POWER™ processor-based servers are Smarter Systems for a Smarter Planet. The combination of leadership performance, energy efficiency, flexible virtualization features and availability features are designed to reduce your cost, improve service to end users and reduce risk – especially for mission critical applications and highly virtualized, consolidated operating environments.

IBM’s POWER7® processors have again demonstrated leadership systems performance – leap-frogging the POWER6® systems by up to 50% in performance per core and having up to 4X the number of processor cores per socket. The new Power 750 and 780, POWER7 processor-based systems, deliver unprecedented performance and scalability for 4-socket and 8-socket systems with over 2.5x the performance per core of similar configurations of HP Itanium and Sun SPARC Enterprise systems and nearly 1.5 times better than published results on competitive systems based on Intel’s newest “Nehalem” processors. In addition, IBM’s built-in virtualization technology enables performance without penalty and PowerVM™ allows a Virtual Machine to scale to the full system – up to 64 virtual processors – 8 times VMware’s limit.

This combination of system performance and virtualization without limits allows clients to get the work done with fewer and/or smaller systems. This advantage has helped our clients to reduce the total cost of ownership with savings in software costs for products licensed by the core, energy costs, floor space, and other operational costs.

Join the movement to realize the benefits

More than 3,300 competitive migrations have been completed helping customers realize these benefits by migrating to Power Systems over the past five years.

Additional information

IBM has built a world-class migration capability to help customers move from their current non-IBM platform to IBM Systems — the IBM Migration Factory.

A new generation of systems that provide compelling new choices for companies of all sizes.
