IBM Power Systems for Service Providers

Tab navigation

Highlights

Businesses are striving to leverage their IT infrastructure so they can extract business insights from an overwhelming amount of data, support business processes that require quicker responses while constantly changing, and drive revenue by providing services to employees and customers through their chosen devices. As businesses struggle to keep up, they are increasingly turning to service providers to manage the cost and complexity of their infrastructure, help the business provide new services, and manage changing resource demands.

Better economics

IBM Power Systems provide critical economic advantages for service providers facing these challenges through an ideal combination of hardware, software, and services.

Service providers can choose from a range of systems. Power Systems enterprise servers provide flexible computing resources for scale-up environments that deliver economic benefits for workload consolidation with capabilities like Power Enterprise Pools, Power Integrated Facility for Linux, and Capacity on Demand. Power Systems Scale-Out servers provide the ideal foundation for scale-out data and cloud environments that deliver the performance-for-price advantages and security service providers need to confidently move data-centric applications to the cloud. With over twice the bandwidth from prior generation servers, these new systems allow open infrastructures to scale out intelligently, with less hardware, power and cooling requirements, and better economics.

Usage-based pricing options offer service providers the flexibility they need to reduce how much they pay up front and then pay only as their usage increases. These options can be combined with Capacity on Demand for IBM Power Systems, a feature that allows the service provider to pay only when they activate dormant processor and memory resources within the system to meet expected peaks in demand. They can also save money by moving IBM i core entitlements from the customer to the service provider through the IBM i entitlement relocation offer.

Whether your infrastructure is scale-up or scale-out, IBM makes it easy to get started. Power Systems offer several quick-start, one-button cloud reference configurations with a choice of Power Systems and software that can be ordered pre-configured by IBM, and includes options for Lab Services assistance to ensure your installation goes smoothly. You can add or change options such as additional software, new or additional storage and networking options.

Designed for big data and the cloud

Businesses need to extract value from all of their data and Power Systems, designed for big data, offer faster computing power than commodity systems, with more cores and twice the number of simultaneous threads per core. And broad pathways move data in and out of systems with world-leading I/O, with massive memory to process data faster with lower latency. As analytics and big data are services often requested by customers, service providers can expand their business by providing these capabilities on Power Systems with confidence that they will perform well.

Similarly, customers are increasingly relying on mobile devices to access business services, so businesses need to extend the delivery of their services to include these new devices. IBM provides solutions on Power Systems to tie these new mobile systems of engagement to the systems of record and existing services.

Cloud service providers will value the flexibility of cloud solutions from IBM running on Power Systems, built on OpenStack, and ranging from virtualization on Power Systems through basic cloud tools to advanced cloud solutions supporting provisioning and orchestration. Additionally, Power Systems offer the flexibility and performance advantages of IBM POWER8™ architecture with the cost savings of open source support from Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, and Ubuntu Linux, plus monitoring and self-service, and the usability advantages of IBM PowerKVM.
