The latest version of Red Hat Linux for enterprise clients, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5) is available for System p5, eServer p5, OpenPower, pSeries and BladeCenter JS21 systems. (Only Red Hat Enterprise Linux for POWER V4 is supported on BladeCenter JS20). It contains the 64-bit Linux kernel (version 2.6) and supports both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. RHEL 5, a popular Linux distribution for server environments, provides high performance and scaling capabilities on IBM POWER5™ and POWER4™ based systems. It supports both SMP (non-LPAR) and LPAR modes of operation.
Red Hat brings expanded functionality to their Linux offerings with RHEL 5 and new improved usage terms by now licensing both RHEL V4 and RHEL V5 on a per server basis versus per install. These changes make RHEL offerings more attractive to clients considering using optional IBM Advanced POWER Virtualization capabilities with RHEL.
Red Hat licensing now entitles use of both version 4 and new RHEL version 5 and is now per server versus per install. This change allows clients using a virtualized environment to use a single Red Hat license for multiple partitions. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is now offered in two variants: One for one–to two–socket systems that can have up to four LPARs with IBM Advanced POWER Virtualization and the other for unlimited socket systems with up to 25 LPARs with IBM Advanced POWER Virtualization. Configurations supported by the optional IBM Advanced POWER Virtualization exceeding the Red Hat license limit will need to order additional licenses. The Red Hat license agreement is available at http://www.redhat.com/licenses/.
Full details on RHEL 5, including a contact sales link, pricing and procedures for obtaining evaluation copies of RHEL, are available directly from Red Hat at www.redhat.com/software/rhel/. Red Hat also has a number of worldwide sales offices.
For the convenience of clients, IBM provides the ability to order a full retail distribution of RHEL in conjunction with any System p5, eServer p5, OpenPower or pSeries system purchase or hardware processor upgrade. IBM will ship the RHEL V4 or RHEL V5 media to the client, pursuant to a license agreement between Red Hat and the client. Clients have the option of ordering RHEL directly from Red Hat, Inc. or their distributors.
