POWER7 supports your applications

Dear Power Systems client:

I hope that, like us, you have been delighted with the market success of our newest POWER7® products. We now have a full range of POWER7 processor-based products, from blades, to modular and enterprise servers. And, we have worked hard to design systems that not only perform well but are easy to implement with operating environment choices supporting thousands of business applications.

The ability to deliver new services faster, with higher quality and with superior economics has seen thousands of businesses migrate to Power Systems. With POWER7, we continue to lead the industry in performance, but have also ensured that we support your most valuable assets -- your applications.

Our broad support for multiple operating systems on POWER7 is the strongest that we have ever had. Even so, some clients have said that they want to hear about binary compatibility directly from me. So, I want to assure you that we are committed to the binary compatibility of POWER7 with the AIX, IBM i and Linux operating systems. We've said we have binary compatibility and we mean it.

The new POWER7 servers run the AIX® 5.3, AIX 6.1 and AIX 7.1 operating systems, with binary compatibility for applications currently running on previous AIX versions on POWER4 or later. Your AIX applications, whether written in house or supplied by an application provider, will run on POWER7 systems with either AIX 5.3, AIX 6.1 or AIX 7.1 if they currently run on AIX V5.1, V5.2, V5.3 or V6.1 without recompilations or modification. The new AIX 7.1 also includes new virtualization capabilities designed to simplify the consolidation of older, AIX V5.2 environments. This new capability, called AIX 5.2 Workload Partitions for AIX 7, is designed to allow administrators to simply back up an existing partition running AIX 5.2 and restore it into an AIX 7 Workload Partition.

POWER7 systems also run the IBM i 6.1 and IBM i 7.1 operating system, with binary compatibility for IBM i applications, even applications supported in S/36 and S/38 environments. Applications running on IBM i 6.1 or IBM i 7.1 will run unchanged on POWER7. Program conversion of applications from previous releases of IBM i continues to work on POWER7 systems as it has on previous Power Systems.

In addition, POWER7 systems support Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server SLES 10 SP3 and SLES 11, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux RHEL 5.5 and RHEL 6 or newer with binary compatibility with those releases running on POWER6 systems. Even well-behaved Linux applications that run today on POWER6 with SLES 10 SP3, SLES 11, RHEL 5.5, or RHEL 6 will run on POWER7 with SLES 10 SP3, SLES 11, RHEL 5.5, or RHEL 6 — without recompilations or modification.

Thank you for your continued confidence in IBM, in Power Systems and in the AIX, IBM i and Linux operating systems. I want you to rest assured that we are taking great care to ensure that when you upgrade to POWER7, your applications will not only run unmodified, but your business will be able rapidly to deploy and leverage the new features of our POWER7 systems.

Sincerely,
Colin
