IBM Power Systems x86 consolidation

IBM Power Systems. Power your planet. Learn how POWER7 can deliver the services you need at a lower cost than x86 solutions.

Power delivers the performance that matters

Power Systems™ redefine the benchmarks that matter today — delivering new business services faster, with higher quality and at lower costs.

The new industry standard

Many companies have settled for x86 performance with the mistaken belief that more power equals more money. That equation has changed.

Today, a comparable workload on IBM Power® 730 Express systems can be as much as 37% less expensive than on HP ProLiant DL380 G7 systems. This comparison is based on performance and virtualization advantage of two IBM Power 730 Express systems with PowerVM Standard Edition with equivalent throughput of five virtualized HP ProLiant DL380 G7 systems with VMware vSphere 4.1 Advanced Edition and takes into account the cost of the systems, operating system, virtualization and middleware software and software support for three years. PowerVM Standard Edition is an optional feature of the IBM Power 730 Express Systems and is purchased separately. VMware vSphere 4.1 Advanced Edition is an optional feature of the HP ProLiant DL380 and is purchased separately.

The specifics are as follows based on comparing WebSphere workloads on Linux on the HP Proliant systems with similar throughput on a configuration of IBM Power systems running AIX. This comparison is based on performance and utilization characteristics in a virtualized environment. Actual performance, system and software savings and environmental cost savings will vary depending on client actual implementation. For additional detail, please see www.ibm.com/power7/claims.

The new math of consolidation

Many organizations might not consider an 18:1 consolidation job because of the typical up-front cost associated with higher-end systems like Power Systems. The math underlying that assumption has changed.

Two IBM Power 730 Express systems can cost less than the annual software subscription and support on 36 HP ProLiant servers, while consuming up to 92% less energy and using up to 89% less rack space. The annual software maintenance costs on the 36 existing scale-out HP ProLiant DL360 G5 servers include Linux server support and WebSphere subscription and support. The IBM Power 730 Express systems include the cost of the systems, operating systems, virtualization and midddleware subscription and support for three years.

In addition, the two Power systems may cost up to 26% less than migrating to the latest HP x86-based servers. This comparison is based on consolidation 36 unvirtualized HP ProLiant DL360 G5 servers to five virtualized HP Proliant DL G7 systems and assumes the WebSphere licenses transfer to the HP ProLiant DL380 G7 systems. Actual performance, costs savings and energy usage will vary depenidng on client actual implementation. For additional detail, please see www.ibm.com/power7/claims.

Can systems be built to do more for less? On a smarter planet they can.
