Computacenter
Computacenter Europe is a leading service provider of IT infrastructures. Our customers include banks, insurance companies and large service enterprises, as well as purchasing and procurement agencies. Our SAP system is the mission critical component of Computacenter's business processes. It provides the scheduling, capacity management and stable infrastructure required to ensure an optimum SAP implementation.

Thanks to this new asset, we are able to maintain the output performance of our SAP system. As well, we can respond on-the-fly to each new business requirement. To fill the needs of the Computacenter's SAP platform, we have installed an IBM eServer p5 590, 570 and 550, IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server and IBM Total Storage 3494 Tape Library Systems, with IBM TotalStorage 3592 J1A tape drive. We rely on AIX and on the HACMP clustering solution, while maintaining data security through IBM Tivoli Storage Manager. And we are running 12 SAP Systems on this IBM Hardware, some of them with high availability in a cluster.

Thanks to the improved scalability and to the high performance of the IBM eServer p5 technology, we have the ability to distribute resources to support the system workload. The key benefit for us here is the capacity to automatically virtualize the granular CPU resources during normal business operations, thus balancing the workload between partitions. This translates into more applications being run on each server, and minimal runtime for SAP processes. For instance, the runtime of some processes was brought down from 2 hours to a few minutes, and our data security mechanism for the SAP data bank was reduced from 4 to 2 hours.

The development of the IBM technology since the last hardware change in 2001 was a huge improvement. Within this period of time, processor clock speed has multiplied by more than five. Offloading of the CPU, thanks to these new technologies, allowed us to roll-out more applications within the company. And reduced stress on the CPU combined with new vanguard technologies has generated substantial economies for the computing center.

With the new hardware, only 5 percent of the floor space in the datacenter is used due to server consolidation. Also, system administration work is easier with the new hardware and virtualization technologies.

In summary, our priority is to stabilize the overall system for running our business operations. Turnaround time and support are essential to our users. The IBM eServer p5 Servers are fast machines, and their cost is also low.
