In today’s Web serving business environment, clients with Web-based applications or database workloads are looking to lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and maximize IT infrastructure and resource efficiency while being responsive to internal requirements. Changes are coming at such a rapid pace that in order to stay on top of new market opportunities and remain competitive in the marketplace, outdated and under-performing IT equipment and solutions need to be converted into flexible, affordable and easy-to-implement solutions for an on demand business.

IBM and Novell bring a powerful advantage to clients in this business environment with the Integrated Stack for SUSE Linux® Enterprise offering. Featuring proven, enterprise-quality software components, Integrated Stack for SUSE Linux Enterprise consists of IBM WebSphere® Application Server Community Edition software, IBM DB2® Express-C software, the Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 operating system and Centeris® Likewise™ management software. Integrated Stack for SUSE Linux Enterprise is bundled with an easy-to-use installation procedure on a single DVD and is available from Novell and Novell Certified Business Partners. The end result is a complete Web-enabled environment built on an open source and open standards-based software stack that can be easily plugged into an existing IT infrastructure. Integrated and easy to install, this software stack is designed to help clients quickly deploy a powerful and complete Web application at a lower cost than proprietary Windows® operating system-based solutions1.

Originally introduced for Intel® processor-based IBM System x™ servers, Integrated Stack for SUSE Linux Enterprise is now pre-tested with and supported by Novell on IBM System p5 and BladeCenter JS21 servers, which have a well-earned reputation for high performance and superior RAS (reliability, availability, serviceability) features. When the software stack is deployed on an IBM System p5 server or BladeCenter JS21 blade server, clients can enhance the flexibility of managing multiple application instances, multiple separate workloads and multiple user domains. Featuring IBM POWER5+™ and PowerPC® processor technology, these IBM servers lead challengers in many key benchmarks2. The SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 operating system can take advantage of this high-performance architecture. The Integrated Stack for SUSE Linux Enterprise offering running on these servers helps clients reduce their total cost of acquisition (TCA), better meet business priorities and user demands and increase business flexibility with the performance of IBM offerings and advanced virtualization technologies.

IBM and Novell have made it easy to add the Linux operating system to an existing Microsoft® Windows® environment, with a fully integrated SUSE Linux solution stack running on IBM System p5 servers and BladeCenter JS21 blade servers.

The integrated solution stack may consist of the following hardware and software components from IBM and Novell:

From IBM:

IBM System p5 Express servers—High-end performance and throughput at attractive prices supporting optional virtualization technologies to help optimize resources and dynamically adapt to change. The POWER5+ processor used in these servers offers simultaneous multithreading, which can increase system utilization and improve application performance. The System p5 Express family includes affordable, high-performing servers designed for clients who want uncompromising flexibility, availability and security features in an entry or mid-range system. These servers are an excellent choice for clients with demanding Web application and database environments that require a flexible combination of architectural options including scale-up, scale-out and scale-within (APV).

IBM BladeCenter JS21 blade server—Reliable, high-performance blade server within the BladeCenter family of products, supporting AltiVec™ SIMD acceleration and optional APV. The BladeCenter platform facilitates integration of server resources, networking infrastructure and storage for Web application and database environments that need to reduce IT costs, complexity, space requirements, power consumption and heat output, while increasing flexibility, utilization and manageability.

IBM System Storage offerings—Storage devices to help store, safeguard, retrieve and share data while helping extend your ability to be as open, as safe and as fast as needed.

IBM DB2 Express-C—Data server based on IBM’s leading DB2 Universal Database™ software, available at no additional cost for use in development and deployment of applications including C/C++, Java, .NET, PHP and more. DB2 Express-C runs on System p5 servers or partitions of System p5 servers. Perhaps the most important benefit of DB2 Express-C is its seamless deployment of databases and applications to any DB2 data server. Applications built with DB2 Express-C are easy to deploy using DB2 Express, DB2 Workgroup or DB2 Enterprise—all with comprehensive support from IBM.

IBM WebSphere Application Server Community Edition—Lightweight, open, no-license-fee J2EE-certified application server built on Apache Geronimo and Tomcat. It harnesses the latest innovations from the open source community and provides a readily accessible and flexible foundation for building Java applications. WebSphere Application Server Community Edition offers a comprehensive solution—the benefits of an open source model along with options for fee-based support from IBM.

From Novell:

Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 operating system—Enterprise-class operating system designed to handle business-critical workloads. It empowers businesses to leverage Linux and open source by delivering a scalable, high-performance foundation for secure enterprise computing. This operating system can take advantage of the advanced technology of the System p5 Express servers and BladeCenter JS21 blade servers including APV, the extensive list of RAS features and the design of IBM Power Architecture™ technology.

Centeris Likewise Management Suite—System management software designed to seamlessly integrate Linux servers in a Windows network, improving the compatibility between the Linux and Windows operating systems. Centeris Likewise simplifies server configuration by allowing remote management of Linux machines from a standard Windows console with familiar Windows operating system-based management tools. Support for this application comes directly from Centeris.

Novell Integrated Stack for SUSE Linux Enterprise DVD—Powerful, enterprise-ready Linux server stack for Java Web applications and services. It features the software previously discussed and includes a YaST setup utility to allow easy installation and configuration of the entire stack. The bundle is integrated, tested and packaged as a DVD and may be ordered from Novell and certified Business Partners of Novell.
