AIX 5L Version 5.2 provides new facilities to improve the availability of a single node. Like HACMP, at a most fundamental level, they work by detecting error conditions, and exploiting redundant hardware to allow normal operation to continue. There is a reasonable concern about how these would function with HACMP. The best case would be where HACMP and these facilities worked together to react to problems. An acceptable configuration is one where HACMP and these facilities handle entirely different classes of problems, and so do not interact. A situation where HACMP and some other facility both attempted to react to the same problem but did not coordinate their actions would very likely not actually fix the original problem, and could well make it worse.
This white paper provides a brief explanation of the MPIO, NIB and VIPA facilities in AIX 5L V5.2, and describes the extent to which they can be combined with HACMP V5.1.
