Open Group is an independent, worldwide, open systems organization supported by most of the world's largest information systems suppliers, user organizations and software companies. Its mission is to bring to users greater value from computing, through the practical implementation of open systems with source code compatible applications.
The UNIX 98 Product Standard Brand is the foundation for Open Group UNIX 98 Branding. The UNIX 98 Product Standard Brand builds upon the UNIX 95 Profile brand but now requires proven conformance to the C Language MSE, Large File Summit, Threads Product Standards and optionally to the Real Time Product Standard.
The UNIX 98 Server Product Standard Brand is a superset of the Open Group UNIX 98 Base Product Standard. The UNIX 98 Server Product Standard Brand adds interoperability services to the UNIX 98 Product Standard to support Internet and intranet services. This includes support of network computer devices and the presence of a mandatory Java execution environment.
The UNIX 98 Workstation Product Standard Brand is a superset of the Open Group UNIX 98 Base Product Standard. The UNIX 98 Workstation Product Standard Brand adds Common Desktop Environment requirements to the UNIX 98 Brand. The UNIX 98 Workstation Product Standard provides a common graphical user interface environment for use on systems supporting the X Window System.
Internet Server defines a set of services in support of Internet and intranet technologies. This includes support of network computer devices and the presence of mandatory Java Runtime Environment. The Internet Server Product Standard complements the Network Computer Profile providing the server side of that definition. The emphasis is towards services and applications support. A standard server will provide a set of core services to support Internet applications. The mandatory functionality includes: the Internet Protocol Suite, Java Runtime Environment and Internet capabilities to support network computer clients.
Network File System provides an application program acting as a client in a client/server configuration with transparent access to files held on the remote server. Conforming products must also be able to act as the server and provide the necessary remote file system support.
Common Desktop Environment defines a common graphical user interface environment for use on systems supporting the X Window System. It defines a standard set of functional capabilities and supporting infrastructure, and the associated standard application programming interfaces, command line actions, data interchange formats and protocols, that must be supported by a conformant system. It provides standard forms of the facilities normally found in a graphical user interface environment, including windowing and window management, session management, file management, electronic mail, text editing, calendar and appointments management, calculator, application building and integration services, print job services, and a help service.
Calendaring and Scheduling defines a high-level calendaring and scheduling application programming interface that can be supported by calendaring and scheduling services. It is intended to facilitate the easy integration of calendaring and scheduling into general applications by providing a standard interface to underlying calendaring and scheduling services.
X Window System Application Interface V2 provides X Window System user interface services to applications via a programmatic interface. It includes the Xlib interface, the X Protocol, ICCCM, and the Xt Intrinsics, at the X11 Release 5 level.
Motif Toolkit defines the APIs equivalent to those of Motif Release 1.2 to a Graphical User Interface toolkit supported by an underlying X Window System at X11 Release 5 level.
In licensing the Open Group UNIX Trademark and branding its products, IBM warrants that AIX conforms to the Single UNIX Specification V2 and will continue to conform to the specification.
Internationalised Systems Calls and Libraries Extended V2 with Headers defines the Single UNIX Specification system interfaces invoked directly from the C Language programs and the associated header files. It corresponds to ISO/IEC 9945-1:1996.
Commands and Utilities V3 are invoked through a command interpreter such as the shell. This corresponds to ISO/IEC 9945-2:1992.
C Language, an Open Group conforming operating system is usually written in the C Language and a large number of applications are also written in C. The international standard for the C Language is ISO/IEC 9899:1990, Programming Languages - C (ANSI X3.159-1989).
Transport Service (XTI) V2 component defines a single programming interface to transport services provides by a variety of protocol stacks.
Internationalised Terminal Interface provides simple internationalised screen management for character-oriented terminals.
Sockets V2 provides sockets interfaces for networking application.
Magnetic Media represents the ability to read and write magnetic media of specific physical size/shapes and recording format.
The Product Standard CSQs provide details of the manner in which the AIX implementation meets the Component and Profile definitions, and defines the environment in which conformance may be reproduced, and the binary-compatible families across which the product is branded.
