With the arrival of IBM POWER5 processor-based systems, advanced virtualization
capabilities, including Micro-Partitioning and Virtual I/O, have significantly extended IBM's
leading-edge virtualization technologies. While such features offering increased flexibility and
consolidation have significant business advantages, they can also raise concern over the security
implications of running applications in shared proximity.
Security has been a fundamental focus in the design of POWER5 systems as it has in the design
of all IBM eServer™ products. This paper highlights security and integrity in this virtualized
environment. The role of security in the on demand environment is presented and hardware and
firmware processes are discussed.
The virtualization features on POWER5 systems create new opportunities for consolidation. This
environment demonstrates strong performance and manageability as well as high integrity and
security.
