iSCSI Basics

iSCSI is Internet SCSI (Small Computer System Interface), an Internet Protocol (IP)-based storage networking standard for linking data storage facilities. iSCSI can be used to transmit data over local area networks (LANs), or wide area networks (WAN) and can enable location-independent data storage and retrieval.

IT managers now have a choice when considering storage area networks (SANs). With industry standard iSCSI protocol, Ethernet networks can now be used to build SANs. iSCSI-based SANs provide the benefits of Fibre Channel SANs, but they use TCP/IP, which is familiar to many IT managers.
