Session A-1: IBM Extreme Blue: Gemeente Amsterdam & Smarter Health: Hello Kidney

Gemeente Amsterdam City of Amsterdam
The department for infrastructure, traffic and transportation of the municipality of Amsterdam wants people to engage with the open data sets they provide, for example to develop apps based on it. Our Breadcrumbs platform is a first step toward this: with the mobile app, people collect information on where and how they move. We call these pieces of information “Breadcrumbs” like in the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel.
For the users, Breadcrumbs offers a very powerful story telling tool that presents journeys they made, or it can recommend new places they will probably like. But also the municipality, researchers, and developers can use the data to create new knowledge, improve their services or create apps on top of that information using our API.

Belgacom Belgacom
Our challenge was to come up with a smart and disruptive idea that Belgacom can add to their services: There are 814 patients on the waiting-list for a kidney today. Those people's quality of life suffers a lot from going to dialysis 3 times a week for at least 5 hours each. As one of those kidney patient you either get a kidney from a deceased or a living donor. Living donors are most likely to be one of your beloved persons. Sadly many patients and potential living donors are incompatible for transplantation. However, those living donors could be compatible with other kidney disease patients. There is no system in Belgium that managed to bring together any of those unlucky couples for cross-over donation, because hospitals are in competition with each other and doctors are reluctant of using systems in place. So we will come up with a matching platform that starts with the patients who desperately need a kidney.

Session A-3: IBM Extreme Blue: Nato & Schiphol

Nato
NATO's objective is to provide security to its member countries; in order to do that, it is becoming more and more important to collect information about what's happening in the world. Such information is present in social media and most of the discussions are happening in public. Our aim is to provide NATO with the capability to analyze the vast amount of data that can be found on social media (such as twitter) and extract opinion out of it. This helps NATO to have a better understanding of the public opinion in a country or region concerning a current topic. Thus they can react more quickly to needs and expectations of member state and their citizens. To conclude, NATO will have the capability to monitor public sentiments in real time and visualize them to react more quickly to potential threats.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Schiphol Airport
For Amsterdam Airport Schiphol sustainability and caring for the planet is an important part of their business. One of Schiphol’s latest endeavours is to transfer the sustainable mindset to her employees and visitors at the Schiphol headquarters. As a symbol of purity and nature our digital waterfall attracts the attention, creates awareness and creates an environment dedicated to sustainability. By offering knowledge on the waterfall in a motivational and actionable manner the waterfall will not only create awareness but also inspire to act more sustainable within the office and at home, resulting in world involved citizens.

Session A-4: IBM Extreme Blue: DMV-FrieslanCampina & KLPD

DMV Simply trusted DMV - FrieslandCampina
FrieslandCampina DMV, part of the business group Ingredients of Royal FrieslandCampina, develops, produces and supplies dairy-based, high-quality functional ingredients to customers in the food industry worldwide. DMV wants to optimize the arrival process of intra products using state of the art technology. The iTo system automates the arrival process using RFID technology to recognize the content of the trucks, and automatically decide whether to grant the truck access to DMV. Next to that each truck is tracked and traced by GPS which enables dynamic planning. iTo uses this information to create instant communication between all parties involved. The central database needed for this system gathers many different kinds of data. This dataset clears the way for business analytics and sparked innovative add on solutions for iTo.

Politie Dutch Police
Our goal is to create a safer society by improving the effectiveness of the Dutch police force through a platform which allows policemen to use the digital expertise of volunteers in their daily activities in an efficient and sustainable way. Based on several surveys, interviews and meetings with policemen, volunteers and experts, we developed a clear and easy-to-use platform called “PoVo”. The PoVo platform includes a Smart Search tool (based on latent semantic data) which makes it easy to find the right volunteer for the right task. With this platform, the police is ready to take on Cybercrime!

Session A-6: IBM Extreme Blue: Allianz & Rijks Waterstaat

Allianz Allianz
Allianz Belgium, an insurance company, would like to launch mobile applications in the Belgian market. The mission is to develop a mobile strategy, and to link the benefits of mobile devices to the insurance sector and its way of working. The challenge entails both a technical focus on adaptive cross-platform development, and a business approach to carve out application features which provide added business value to our client. Our proposed solution consists of two components: an app targeted at insurance brokers to ease their daily life, as well as a client app designed to intelligently manage claims and closely tie the client to his broker and Allianz.

Rijkswaterstaat Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Milieu Rijkswaterstaat
Rijkswaterstaat is the department of public works of the ministry of infrastructure and environment, responsible for water quality, and construction and maintenance of roads and waterways. They challenged Extreme Blue to increase the sustainability of their data management. To solve this challenge we came up with a semantic search engine. This technology makes it easy to integrate multiple datasets and based on those, intelligently search for one high quality answer. The prototype is build based on data from a road district, helping the maintenance manager to significantly cut back on time spend collecting data and giving him quicker and better access to his information needs. This prototype is a first step towards implementing semantic technology within Rijkswaterstaat. The goal is to build towards an organization that can call itself a data authority within its field and provide information for sustainable development in an open data format.

Adjiedj Bakas

Biography

Bruno Michel, IBM Research – Zurich

Roadmap towards Ultimately-Efficient Zeta-Scale Datacenters

Biography
Bruno Michel received a Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of Zurich and subsequently joined IBM Research to work on scanning probe microscopy. He then introduced micro¬contact printing and led an international industry project for the development of accurate large-area soft lithography. Dr. Michel started the Advanced Thermal Packaging group in response to the needs of the industry for improved thermal interfaces and better miniatur¬ized convective cooling. Main current research topics of the Zurich group are microtechnology, microfluidics, 3D packaging, thermophysics, and datacenter energy re-use for future green IT. Bruno Michel leads the smart energy efforts in Zurich with ground breaking work on ultimately efficient photovoltaic systems that also provide desalinated water and on improved adsorption heat pumps that are driven by datacenter waste heat.

Roadmap towards Ultimately-Efficient Zeta-Scale Datacenters

Bruno Michel, IBM Research – Zurich

Chip microscale liquid-cooling reduces thermal resistance and improves datacenter efficiency with higher coolant temperatures by eliminating chillers and allowing thermal energy re-use in cold climates. Liquid cooling enables an unprecedented density in future computers to a level similar to a human brain. This is mediated by a dense 3D architecture for interconnects, fluid cooling, and power delivery of energetic chemical compounds transported in the same fluid. Vertical integration improves memory proximity and electrochemical power delivery creating valuable space for communication. This strongly improves large system efficiency thereby allowing computers to grow beyond exa-scale.
