Highlights
- Supports open standards virtualization based on IEEE 802.1Qbg Edge Virtual Bridging
- Discover and identify virtual machines in the data center—automatically
- Create groups of similar virtual machines with dedicated switch resources and isolated from other virtual machines
- Track all virtual machines during migrations
- Reconfigure network settings automatically
- Manage virtual machines in the network across entire data center for any end device or edge switch- compliant with the 802.1Qbg standard
- Enforce network policies on virtual machines resident inside the same hypervisor
- No proprietary tagging or changes to hypervisor software
- Works with all major hypervisors
- Supports IEEE 802.1Qbg Edge Virtual Bridging
- Scales across multiple physical switches and to any edge device supporting the 802.1Qbg standard
- Integration with VMware vCenter
- Track virtual machines during migrations with automatic reconfiguration of network settings
- VMready uses open standards and requires no propriety tagging or changes to Hypervisor software
- VMready works with all major hypervisors including: VMware, Hyper-V, Xen, KVM, Oracle VM and PowerVM
Current networking switches are not aware of virtual machines (VM) and this can lead to incorrect network configurations that can expose virtual machines to service outages or security breaches, and prevent virtualization from reaching its full potential in creating cloud computing and dynamic data centers.
IBM System Networking has patented a unique solution to make the network virtual machine aware. The approach—called VMready®—extends the concept of virtualization into the network, so that network polices can be configured for virtual machines, rather than just for the physical switch port.

Common features
- Automatic discovery of virtual machines in the network
- NMotion—the automatic migration of VM network configuration and VM Group features
- VMware VI-API integration to manage physical and virtual switches from a single pane of glass
- Centralized database for managing VM Group configurations across data centers
Software summary
- VMready provides visibility into the underlying virtual environment beyond the physical servers
- VMready provides the ability to manage VMs in the network and inside the hypervisor
- VMready enables network configuration to be applied to each virtual machine
