SUN-SET Special!
Migrate applications from Sun to IBM and earn up to 8,000 zRewards points per core through December 31, 2009.
System z™ delivers large scale consolidation capabilities for savings of up to 80% in total cost of ownership compared to distributed platforms.1 As part of our commitment to deliver on-going price performance improvement and to increase the economic value to our clients we are taking actions to reduce the cost of deploying and growing new workloads on System z. Our goal is to assure we continue to provide highly competitive alternatives for new workloads being deployed on System z. In less than one year, IBM has migrated more than 150 customers worldwide from competitive systems to IBM mainframes in industries such as Distribution, Financial Services, General Business and Public Sector. IBM System z Rewards can help you access that experience and reduce the risk as you migrate to industry-leading virtualization.
IBM z Rewards can help reduce the risk as you migrate to System z.
Introducing z Rewards
A new program that simplifies migrating applications from HP, SUN and other competitive servers to IBM System z10.
This program will allow clients who are purchasing qualifying new System z 10 capacity to earn extra value from IBM when moving workloads from competitive servers to System z. You earn reward points that can be redeemed for high value IBM migration expertise and services. The amount of rewards you can earn is based on the number of competitive cores that the workloads run on before they are moved to System z. IBM migration services are delivered by experienced IBM and System z Authorized Business Partner consultants who have participated in helping clients who have already moved up to IBM.
Our proven record of compatibility moving from generation to generation of System z processors means that you can make your next platform move your last platform move.
Our results.
- For 2008 full year, Gartner reports that System z revenue share for servers priced at or above $250,000 is up 2 points and System z leads #2 HP by 17 points for full year.2
- According to IDC, System z has nearly doubled its revenue share since Q4’00 from 17% to 32%.3
- Cross-industry appeal: all of the top 50 worldwide banks4 and 22 of the top 25 U.S. retailers5 run System z.
- Installed capacity of new workload engines is growing rapidly comparing the first half of 2008 to the first half of 2007 - with Linux specialty engines MIPS (IFLs) growing at 30%, Java specialty engines MIPS (zAAPs) growing at 49% and database specialty engines MIPS (zIIPs) growing at 141%.6
Since 2004, more than 5,000 companies worldwide have replaced their HP, Sun, and EMC products with energy-efficient IBM Systems and Storage. Companies have invested in IBM's System z to tackle their most challenging business objectives and to help reduce sprawling data center costs for labor, energy and real estate.
IBM understands there are costs to migrate from HP and SUN servers to IBM System z10. IBM introduces z Rewards to help reduce the cost of services to migrate from HP, SUN and other competitive servers to IBM System z 10. Ensure availability of appropriate migration services for smooth transition and on time delivery of migration efforts.
Consolidate your workload on a single IBM System z mainframe.
- Replace UNIX® and x86 processors at a 10 - 30 to 1 IFL ratio
- Reduce UNIX and x86 OTC SW support costs at a 10 - 30 to 1 ratio
- Consolidate x86 software licenses at up to a 30 to 1 ratio
- Leverage the ability of Linux on System z on z10 EC to run many distributed workloads and to consolidate x86 core processors at up to a 30:1 ratio to deliver significant IT Cost savings7
Here’s a cool example:
IBM will consolidate 3,900 servers to about 20 System z10 servers with expected reductions in energy consumption of over 80%.

z Rewards rules: It's simple.
- Buy new capacity on a System z10
- Move workload from HP, SUN and other non-IBM qualifying competitive servers to an installed or new eligible System z and get z Rewards.
- Use z Rewards to migrate to the IBM mainframe with IBM expertise.
- Enjoy the benefits of moving up to IBM.
Eligibility: To earn z Rewards Points purchase qualifying System z capacity from IBM or an authorized IBM Business Partner. At the time of the purchase, let IBM know about the workloads that will be moved and complete the z Rewards Program Agreement. In this agreement, you will certify the number and type of cores contained in those systems and that the systems are currently in productive use. Note that z Rewards may not be combined with rebates and other special offers and are not transferable. Contact your local System z sales representative or Authorized System z IBM Business Partner for maximum rewards eligibility.
Points: z Rewards Points are earned based on the number and types of cores used for the workloads moved to IBM. The points you can earn for each core is shown in the Rewards Points Schedule. The maximum number of z Rewards Points per Replaced Machine is dependent upon the configuration and final pricing of the System z capacity purchased from IBM or your authorized IBM Business Partner, and can be as high as 50% of the customer end user price of the qualifying System z purchase. Your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner can help you calculate the limit for your transaction. The points will be credited to you when you have contracted for the new System z 10 capacity, and completed the z Rewards Program Agreement.
The points will be credited to you when you have contracted for the qualifying system, and completed the z Rewards Customer Agreement. You may redeem the points as soon as they have been credited. You have up to one year from the delivery of your new System z10 capacity to use your z Reward Points. However if you do not install the qualifying system, then you will be charged for the rewards you have redeemed at the rate of $1US per point.
z Rewards redemption
You may redeem the points as soon as they have been credited. You may only redeem z Reward Points once for each non-IBM Machine Type/Model Serial Number from which you are removing productive workload. You have up to one year from the installation of your new System z10 capacity to redeem your z Rewards Points, after which they are void. System z Rewards Points may not be redeemed outside of the country earned. If you do not install the new System z 10 capacity, then you will be charged for the rewards you have redeemed at the rate of $1US per point.
If you are a U.S. commercial, state and local government, or education customer, you can participate. If you are a U.S. federal government customer, call 800-333-6705 to determine eligibility.
