The operating system agents serve as the control point for accessing operating system and host information. These agents run on operating system-based and hardware-based systems that can be discovered and managed by IBM® Systems Director. The level of system management depends on the agent that is installed on the system: Common Agent or Platform Agent.
The preferred method of installing agents is to import them into IBM Systems Director Server and use the Agent Installation wizard to install them. However, you can also install them manually directly on the managed server. The type of installation package you download depends on which type of installation you plan to do.

You can also download the Common Agent Services (CAS) managers, which allow clients to obtain information about agents and resource managers. It includes a registration service that provides authentication and authorization services and maintains a registry of configuration information about the managed computer systems in your environment.

More information
Common Agent provides a rich set of security and deployment function, including discovering systems, monitoring health, managing alerts, managing power, and others. In most cases, Common Agent replaces Level 2: IBM Director Agent version 5.20. (For IBM i, use IBM Director Agent version 5.20.2).
Platform Agent provides a subset of the function provided by Common Agent and is well suited to environments that require a smaller footprint without sacrificing manageability. Platform Agent is equivalent to Level 1: IBM Director Core Services version 5.20.
Each agent provides a different footprint size, level of performance, and set of management functions.
