Project MareNostrum

Demonstrating the value of Linux clustering—for science, for business, for life itself

View non-Flash version
A quest evolves

For centuries, the world’s greatest scientific thinkers have pursued innovation with the goal of answering life’s most important questions: How are we born, and why do we die? What is our physical makeup, and what do we require to sustain us? Today the quest continues, led by scientists armed with powerful information resources and new technologies. Among these tools, the supercomputer has become indispensable.
Like medical innovations of earlier eras, supercomputers were once inaccessible to all but the wealthiest institutions. Long a leader in supercomputers, IBM has worked hard to place supercomputing technology within the reach of more governments, research organizations and university labs answering some of today’s most important questions: What is the structure of the human genome? How do proteins behave? How do contagious diseases spread, and how can we stop them?
The MareNostrum project is the latest bold experiment in supercomputing by IBM: small yet powerful, rapidly deployed and built entirely from commercially available components, MareNostrum promises to raise one question as important as those it helps to answer: How will tomorrow’s great minds use this technology to improve the quality of human life?

A new approach to HPC

What if one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers—ranked among the top five in the prestigious TOP500—could be constructed from products available for sale to any business, within a relatively small footprint and on a tight schedule? Using blade servers, a Linux operating environment and other cost-efficient technologies to help unravel the most complex, compute-intensive problems, MareNostrum represents a new way of thinking about high performance computing.

Innovations that matter

The foundations of MareNostrum—scale-out processing, superior price/performance, the flexibility of an open systems environment—are integral to on demand business transformation as well. Regardless of your industry or the size of your organization, the IBM Linux on POWER clustering technologies that make up MareNostrum can have significant implications for the success of your business.
