Unified Management

Cross platform management from a single console
In virtually every enterprise, the need to develop and deploy new solutions is counterbalanced by the need to continually monitor, manage and maintain the assets in place. For example, the typical large organization devotes 70 percent of its IT resources to maintenance of current operations. Less than one third of the budget is available for strategic development. IBM offers proven ways to correct this imbalance with accelerated deployment of sophisticated rules-based solutions that automate and simplify multiplatform systems management.

Instead of having a different management tool and process for every different system, service and domain in your network, management should be centralized – unified – to provide a faster, easier and more holistic way to oversee the IT infrastructure.

What is Unified Management?

Think of all the assets that combine to form your total IT infrastructure. Every component, every server, router, hub, process and application needs to function continuously without fault or downtime. If a failure occurs and remediation is required, you need efficient ways to find and fix it. So, the operational health of each connected device must be constantly monitored and reported on. Over the years, many different software systems have been created to monitor and control different types of connected devices. This results in immense complexity for large organizations with heterogeneous systems, and for the operations personnel charged with keeping things running.

A unified systems management solution minimizes this complexity and centralizes control, while increasing visibility into the health of the IT infrastructure. With unified systems management, all infrastructure components are visible through a single centralized console, utilizing a common management and control framework. In addition, many problem remediation responses such as taking a faulty server offline or reinitializing an application can be done automatically, allowing “lights out” operation.

Why is Unified Management important?

Having effective multi-platform systems management capabilities is of strategic importance to nearly every institution because it can help reduce the labor costs and leverage the savings for driving business innovation and growth. Today, every member of your user community from end customers to the CEO demands and expects round the clock, fail safe reliability. The ability to capture dynamic alerts on system status so you can recover quickly and reliably from inevitable faults and failures can be a district competitive advantage. The faster you can find, assess and remediate any outage, and the faster you can determine what resources are involved and what business processes may be affected, the better off you'll be. Centralizing systems management functions through a unified console is a more efficient, intelligent and cost-effective way to fulfill this core systems availability requirement.

How can IBM help you benefit from Unified Management?

Organizations with multiple platforms often face diminished business agility and increased costs due to the complexity involved in managing the infrastructure. IBM offers innovative solutions that unify management in different ways.

IBM Systems Director software for Power Systems provides system and virtual machine management through a single pane of glass to help reduce complexity. IBM Systems Director unifies systems management, delivering a consistent look and feel for common management tasks and enabling seamless integration of Power Systems with the overall infrastructure. Extensible and module, the solution offers additional capabilities through Systems Director Editions or with individual plug-in options. For instance, IBM Systems Director VMControl is a plug-in module that integrates Power Systems’ unique virtualization capabilities to deliver simplified management of physical and virtual platform resources.

zEnterprise with IBM zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager (zManager) delivers mainframe governance to the combined mainframe and distributed environment, providing consistent, automated and reliable service delivery with a single system view. It offers hardware management, operational controls and virtualization management of the multi-platform environment through a single management system (zManager). Key functions include automatic sensing discovery and definition of new resources, patch management, dynamic defines, repair verification, and monitoring. zManager also introduces “workload context” that can be used to identify and optimize the physical and virtual system resources that support an application, giving the solution workload awareness – the ability to inspect, report, and manage all connected resources, regardless of whether they involve the mainframe, the distributed architecture, or both.

IBM Pure Flex Systems combines uncompromising system designs with built-in expertise, integrating them into a complete, optimized, scalable solution. Using IBM Flex System Manager, various solution components – including compute nodes, network and storage infrastructures, storage systems, and multi-platform virtualization environments – can be managed from a single panel.

And because of extensive integration with these systems, Tivoli provides end-to-end service management of multi-platform resources across the enterprise. Offering robust workload management and federated data capabilities for complete monitoring, Tivoli provides automated, workload-centric, enterprise-wide IT service management that aligns to your organization’s business goals and service level agreements (SLAs).
