The Event Driven Application Server is a new class of platform middleware that supports an event-based programming model. The role of the Application Server is to simplify the job of the service by providing solutions to as many of the difficult decisions that must be made during development of the application or service. The application server provides a set of facilities that service developers leverage so they may focus on building business logic rather than implementing low-level infrastructure. Rhino provides an open standards service environment for programming the control and coordination of events. The service environment is abstracted from the network. This enables operators and service providers to execute new service deployment strategies rapidly, cost effectively and independently from current and future underlying networks, providing an evolutionary path for the delivery of revenue generating services

Performances characteristics:
Using the IBM BladeCenter T, the Rhino Event Driven Application Server (EDAS) acting as an IMS SIP Application Server was able to:
- Advanced Prepaid service scenario for 9.8 million subscribers demonstrated sustained throughput of 21,760 messages/second (17,680 SIP messages/ second, 4080 Diameter messages/second) in a fully configured IBM BladeCenter T (8 blades).
- Support 1.2 million subscribers/blade - 2,720 messages/blade (2,210 SIP messages + 510 Diameter messages/blade).
- Demonstrated linear horizontal and vertical scalability of Rhino SLEE on the IBM BladeCenter T.
- LS20 AMD-based Opteron blades provided 33% higher throughput over HS20 Intel Xeon blades, with AMD Opteron configuration being able to support more than 13 million subscribers in a single, fully configured IBM BladeCenter T (over 29,000 messages/second)
