PTFs SI24934 for V5R4, SI24933 for V5R3 and SI24932 for V5R2 include support for the data encryption capabilities that are now standard on IBM System Storage™ TS1120 Model E05 Tape Drives. No PTFs are required for V6R1 and above.
Tape-based encryption provides an alternative to host-based data encryption and specialized encryption appliances. This alternative supports high volume encryption of tape data that protects your information if those tape cartridges are lost or stolen.
BRMS utilizes the Encryption Key Manager that supports the generation and communication of encryption keys for the TS1120 and LTO4 tape drives across the enterprise.
BRMS provides support for the new encrypted media density, FMT3592A2E. You can create a media class for all of the media that you want to encrypt by setting up that class to use density FMT3592A2E. LTO4 media uses the same density , *ULTRIUM4 for both encrypted and non-encrypted saves. Then you can use that media class:
- to enroll your encryption-capable media into the BRMS inventory
- for all media policies that require encrypted save and archive operations
