Take advantage of the functions provided by the suite of TCP/IP protocols and many applications that run on IBM i.
IBM i offers robust support for TCP/IP, the protocol of the Internet. With the integrated TCP/IP capabilities of IBM i, users can link to networks throughout the world.
The use of TCP/IP is pervasive in the current marketplace for multivendor interconnected networks. An example of this marketplace dominance is the international collection of networks known as the Internet. TCP/IP ties all of the Internet's individual networks together so that any individual user can reach systems anywhere else in the Internet. TCP/IP allows all nodes in the Internet to communicate as if they were on the same physical network, regardless of their specific hardware or software architecture. In this way, TCP/IP provides interoperability.
TCP/IP is an international set of protocols, standardized by the Internet Architecture Board. The document that provides the standard for a particular protocol or function is called a Request for Comment (RFC). Over 2000 RFCs are available today.
Features at a glance
TCP/IP on IBM i capabilities (integrated into IBM i at no additional charge) include:
IPv6
IBM i supports the latest IP protocol, IP version 6. IPv6 has many new features that make networking more safe and reliable. Its larger address format expands the address space from around 4 billion IP address with IPv4 to over 340 undecillion (or 3.40282367 × 1038) addresses – making it the answer to the Internet's growing-concerns.
IPv6 supports and updates most IPv4 features while maintaining backwards compatibility to ensure functionality of current applications.
