What's New in V5R2?
The major enhancements to i5/OS NetServer in OS/400 V5R2 are briefly listed below. The System i and i5/OS Information Center has more detailed information about some of these enhancements.

GA Function Description

Kerberos v5 Authentication

i5/OS NetServer now supports using Kerberos Version 5 (v5) for user authentication from Windows 2000/XP clients. For this support, i5/OS NetServer has teamed up with the iSeries Navigator Security option, Network authentication service, Enterprise Identity Mapping (EIM), and the Cryptographic Access Provider (5722-AC2 or AC3) to make your network fundamentally more secure.

Informational Messaging i5/OS NetServer can automatically send network informational messages to users in the form of Windows Popup messages. These messages can alert you to specific connection issues or conditions like the following:
  1. The user profile does not exist
  2. The user profile is disabled
  3. The user is disabled for NetServer access
  4. The user has been enabled for NetServer access
  5. The password is expired
  6. The user profile does not have a password
  7. The user's password will expire in X days
  8. There was a Kerberos authentication failure

To enable, change the 'Message logging severity level' for the QZLSSERVER job description to 20 and restart i5/OS NetServer. Linux can also be configured to receive these messages.

Kerberos and Password client coexistence This PTF set has added the ability for i5/OS NetServer to authenticate users with either encrypted passwords or Kerberos v5 tickets in a mixed mode environment. Apply this PTF set if you will require a gradual migration to Kerberos authentication, or if you have clients that do not support Kerberos that will not be migrated.
