As your business grows and competes in today's ever-changing environment, Web-based solutions are becoming increasingly critical to connect with your customers, suppliers and partners, as well as employees. Open source technology provides a foundation for many of these new solutions. The rise in popularity of open source software (OSS) is related to a number of potential benefits, including:
- Low acquisition cost: the cost of acquiring OSS may be low or even zero with optional support offerings priced separately.
- Easy to acquire: OSS is often simply downloaded from the Web.
- More choice and flexibility: OSS can often be obtained from a choice of suppliers and often runs on multiple hardware architectures.
- High code quality: the peer review process of open source development has tended to produce high quality code, and robust community support helps turn around bug fixes very quickly.
- Community innovation: the community approach frees developers to focus on value add components. One popular foundation for Web applications is a group of tools known as the "LAMP" stack. The acronym LAMP refers to a solution stack of open source programs, used together to run dynamic Web sites. LAMP expands to:
- Linux, referring to the operating system.
- Apache, the Web server.
- MySQL, the database server
- PHP, the programming language
To support deployments of open source applications on the IBM System i platform, IBM and MySQL AB have teamed together to provide the MySQL open source database on i5/OS.
