Determine if either of the following is true:
- There are a significant number of Fax servers that are all configured to use the same Fax Windows Services System.
- This Windows Fax Conversion Service is attempting to handle several large fax conversion requests simultaneously.
If either of the above scenarios is true, then do one of the following:
- Configure some of your Fax servers to use a different Fax Windows Services System which is not as busy.
- Upgrade your current Fax Windows Services System to handle the heavy fax conversion workload.
If this Windows Fax Conversion Service is not encountering a heavy fax conversion workload, you should be able to resolve the problem by
restarting the entire network of Fax servers that use this particular Fax Windows Services System.

There are a number of possible reasons why the Windows Fax Conversion Service cannot open the Fax Spool Mailbox (NFXSPOOL.NSF) database. Complete the following to recover from this problem:
- From your Fax Windows Services System, follow these steps to ensure the Windows Fax Conversion Service is using the correct Notes user ID file that you created when you installed Domino Fax (using the Domino Fax for i5/OS Installation Guide):
- Start the Notes client.
- From the Notes client menu bar, select
File - Tools - User ID...
- If the User ID information displayed in the User ID window is correct, close the User ID window and
continue to the next step. If it is not correct, do the following:
- Close the User ID window.
- From the Notes client menu bar, select
File - Tools - Switch ID...
- Open the correct User ID; the ID that the Windows Fax Conversion Service should use.
- Restart the entire network of Fax servers that use this Fax Windows Services System for fax conversion.
- If the
previous step did not solve your problem, examine the Fax Spool Mailbox (NFXSPOOL.NSF) database's Access Control List (ACL) to make sure that the Notes user ID that is being used by the Windows Fax Conversion Service has the necessary authorities. (By default, the Notes user ID is given Manager access without authority to delete documents.) If the ACL is correct,
continue to the next step. If the ACL is not correct:
- If the
previous steps did not solve your problem, make sure that this particular Fax Windows Services System can make a TCP/IP connection to the Domino server. If TCP/IP is configured correctly,
continue to the next step. Otherwise, configure TCP/IP by by using one or more of the following four methods:
- In the Personal Address Book located on the Fax Windows Services System, create a new Notes server connection document for the Domino server where Fax is running.
- Contact your network administrator to make sure your Domain Name Server (DNS) includes the host name of the Domino server where Fax is running.
- On your Fax Windows Services System, create a new LMHOSTS table entry for the Domino server where Fax is running.
- Contact your Notes administrator to determine the correct configuration for successful communications between the Domino server and the Notes client on the Fax Windows Services System.
When you have corrected the TCP/IP configuration,
restart the entire network of Fax servers that use this Fax Windows Services System for fax conversion.
- If the
previous steps did not solve your problem, make sure that the Fax Spool Mailbox database (NFXSPOOL.NSF) exists on the iSeries server. If it does exist, continue to the next step. If it does not, reinstall Domino Fax for i5/OS, and then
restart the entire network of Fax servers that use this Fax Windows Services System for fax conversion.
- If none of the previous steps solve the problem, do the following:
- Start the Notes client on the Fax Windows Services System.
- Attempt to open the Fax Spool Mailbox database (NFXSPOOL.NSF) located on the Fax server which is having problems.
- Correct the error that you receive when you attempt to open NFXSPOOL.NSF.
- Restart the entire network of Fax servers that use this Fax Windows Services System for fax conversion.

Since Notes is having problems with the name of the Domino server where Fax is installed, make sure that the hierarchical Domino server name consists of only code page 850 ASCII characters and is a valid server name. If you think there may be a problem with the name, change the Domino server name or install Domino Fax on a different Domino server. If the Domino server name appears to be valid, complete the following steps:
- From the appropriate Administrator Workstation,
stop Fax on
ALL Domino servers that use this particular Fax Windows Services System for fax conversions.
- When every Fax server that uses this Fax Windows Services System has ended,
stop the Fax Conversion Service from the Fax Windows Services System.
- From the Fax Windows Services System,
start the Fax Conversion Service with the DEBUG option specified so that debug information is logged.
- Start Fax on the Domino server that encountered the problem.
- When the problem occurs again, examine the Fax Conversion Service debug log (located on the Fax Windows Services System in file
C:\QFXDrouter.log). Search for a line in the debug log that contains a message similar to:
Domino server name is
CN=acme/O=acmeorg.
(where acmeis your Domino server name and acmeorg is the Domino server's organization)
The lines following this message describe the Notes error encountered while parsing the distinguished Domino server name. Make sure that the names in that line are in code page 850 ASCII and readable.
- Stop Fax on the Domino server that encountered the problem, and attempt to correct the problem using the QFXDrouter.log file's debug information.
- Stop and
start the Windows Fax Conversion Service.
- Start Fax on
ALL Domino servers that use this Fax Windows Services System.
- If the Notes error that is logged does not help you determine the problem and if the Domino server name appears to be valid, report the problem and provide the
C:\QFXDrouter.log file.

C:\QFXDrouter.log). Search for a line in the debug log that contains a message similar to:
An error occurred while accessing the
C:\notes\data\NFXTEMP\acme temporary directory.
(where
C:\notes\data is the Notes data directory on your Fax Windows Services System and acme is your Domino server name)
- Examine your Fax Windows Services System for the following directories:
- The Notes data directory: If the Notes data directory (i.e.,
C:\notes\data) does not exist, your Notes client is not configured correctly. Correct this. (You may need to reinstall the Notes client on your Fax Windows Services System.)
- The NFXTEMP subdirectory of the Notes data directory: If the NFXTEMP subdirectory does not exist, create it.
- The Domino server name subdirectory of
C:\notes\data\NFXTEMP: The Windows Fax Conversion Service attempts to create a subdirectory using the name of the Domino server name where Fax is running. If the subdirectory does not exist, make sure that the Domino server name is in code page 850 ASCII and readable. If it is, try to manually create a subdirectory of
C:\notes\data\NFXTEMP using the Domino server name. If you encounter a problem creating the Domino server name subdirectory, correct it.
- Stop the Fax Conversion Service from the Fax Windows Services System.
- Start the Fax Conversion Service from the Fax Windows Services System.
- From the appropriate Administrator Workstation,
