Domino Fax Log Messages: Error Code 11403
Code Description, Cause & Recovery
11403 Description:
Error x communicating with Windows Fax Conversion Service during thread t format conversion. Additional error code is y : z.

Cause:
An error occurred while the Fax server was converting fax documents. One of the following problems occurred:

  • There was a communications error with the Windows Fax Conversion Service running on the Fax Windows Services System.
  • There was an OS/400 file problem which prevented the Fax server from receiving the converted files from the Windows Fax Conversion Service running on the Fax Windows Services System.

This particular Fax server format converter thread (thread t) will probably end because of the error. If all Fax server format converter threads have ended, no faxes can be sent or received until this problem is resolved. Error codes and their meanings follow. Please note the values of additional error codes y and z, and then select one of the following to get more detailed information based on the error code x:

Error code x is 11
Error code x is 12
Error code x is 21
Error code x is 22
Error code x is 11: The Fax server cannot send a new fax conversion request to the Windows Fax Conversion Service running on the Fax Windows Services System. This new fax conversion request contains the Fax Spool Job Reference ID that the Windows Fax Conversion Service thread needs to determine which Fax spool job (found in NFXSPOOL.NSF) requires fax conversions.

Recovery: Based on the value of additional information y, select one of the following:

Recovery when y is 0, -1, -2, -3, -4
Recovery when y is 1045

Error code x is 12: An error occurred while the Fax server waited for a response from the Windows Fax Conversion Service indicating that the service was ready to handle an incoming fax or that it had successfully converted an incoming or outgoing fax.

Recovery: Based on the value of additional information y, select one of the following:

Recovery when y is 0, -1, -2, -3, -4
Recovery when y is 1045

Error code x is 21: The Fax server has received an incoming fax but is unable to pass the incoming fax files to the Windows Fax Conversion Service running on the Fax Windows Services System.

Recovery: Based on the value of additional information y, select one of the following:

Recovery when y is 0, -1, -2, -3, -4
Recovery when y is 1045

Error code x is 22: The Windows Fax Conversion Service running on the Fax Windows Services System has successfully converted the incoming or outgoing fax into the necessary format. An error has occurred which prevents the service from sending the converted fax files back to the Fax server for delivery.

Recovery: Based on the value of additional information y, select one of the following:

Recovery when y is 0, -1, -2, -3, -4
Recovery when y is -5, -6, -7
Recovery when y is 1045

A communications error occurred while the Fax server was sending data to or receiving data from the Windows Fax Conversion Service. The value of y indicates the type of error that occurred:

  • Communications timed out (0)
  • Communications error occurred while the Fax server was waiting to send or receive data (-1)
  • TCP/IP communications link ended unexpectedly (-2)
  • Communications error occurred while the Fax server was actually sending and receiving data (-3)
  • Communications error occurred while the Fax server tried to change the TCP/IP connection mode (-4)

To resolve the communications problem between the Fax server and the Windows Fax Conversion Service, attempt the following recovery actions:

  • It is possible that either the Fax Windows Services System or the Windows Fax Conversion Service was ended and was not restarted within 5 minutes. (For information about adjusting the amount of time that the Fax server will wait for the Fax Windows Services to be restarted, see Administering Your Fax Windows Services System.) From the appropriate Administrator Workstation, stop and then start Domino Fax.
  • If this error continues to occur, you may have a performance problem or a fax job with a bad document. Complete the following steps:
    • Stop Fax on all Domino servers that use this Fax Windows Services System for fax conversions.
    • Go to the Fax Windows Services System and make sure that it is operating properly. If it is not, stop the Windows Fax Conversion Service (if possible), and reboot the Windows system.
    • When the Fax Windows Services System is operating properly, make sure that the Windows Fax Conversion Service is actually started. (See Determining if Fax Conversion Service is Active.) If it is not active, start the Windows Fax Conversion Service.
    • When the Fax Conversion Service is active, determine if the Fax Windows Services System's performance is being degraded significantly for some reason. This could occur because many fax conversion requests are being sent to this Fax Windows Services System from several different Fax servers or because one or more Windows processes are not executing properly.
    • If you see that there are a significant number of simultaneous, large fax conversion requests, you can configure your Fax server to use a different Fax Windows Services System which is not as busy or upgrade your Fax Windows Services System to handle the heavy fax conversion workload. If you have one or more runaway or misbehaving Windows processes, end those processes.
Note: Make sure that the process is indeed a runaway process before ending it. It may simply be converting a very large Notes attachment.
    • Start Fax on all Domino servers that use this Fax Windows Services System for fax conversion.
  • If the previous steps did not resolve the problem, it may be that one of the Fax Spool Mailbox database (NFXSPOOL.NSF) fax jobs has an attachment which cannot be handled by the Windows Fax Conversion Service. If possible, notify the sender that the fax cannot be delivered and then delete that particular fax job. Use the steps described in the "To delete a fax job from the Spool" section of the Domino Fax for i5/OS Admin Guide.
  • If the problem persists, you may have a TCP/IP network problem. Contact your network administrator.

Note: The value of additional information z may provide more information to help determine the cause and recovery of this problem. Click here for more information about the value of z.

Fax has encountered an OS/400 error which prevents the converted fax files from being created on the iSeries server. The value of y indicates the type of error that occurred:

  • Filename cannot be translated (-5)
  • File cannot be created (-6)
  • Data received from the Windows Fax Conversion Service running on the Fax Windows Services System cannot be written to the newly created OS/400 file (-7)

From the Administrator Workstation for your Domino server, complete the following steps:

  • If y = -5, make sure that the OS/400 and Fax Windows Services System code pages are compatible.
  • Verify that the /QIBM/USERDATA/LOTUS/FAX/TMP/ directory exists and that the QNOTES user profile has *RWX Data Authority and *ALL Object Authorities. Use the Work with Authority (WRKAUT) command and specify '/QIBM/USERDATA/LOTUS/FAX/TMP/ ' for the Object ( OBJ) parameter.
  • Run the Work with Domino Servers (WRKDOMSVR) command to display the list of Domino servers configured on your iSeries server. Select option 9 for the Domino server that is running Fax to bring up the Work with Active Jobs display:
    • If FAX is listed on the Work with Active Jobs display, do the following:
      • Select option 5 for the FAX job. This brings up a Work with Job display.
      • Select option 10 to display the FAX job log.
      • Read the messages listed to determine the cause and recovery of this problem.
      • Stop Fax and then correct the problem.
      • Start Fax.
    • If FAX is not listed on the Work with Active Jobs display, do the following:
      • Use the Work with Spooled Files (WRKSPLF) command and choose QNOTES for the User option and FAX for the User data option of the SELECT parameter. This displays a list of FAX job logs.
      • Find the FAX job log that corresponds to this particular problem and choose option 5 to display it.
      • Read the messages listed to determine the cause and recovery of this problem.
      • Stop Fax and then correct the problem.
      • Start Fax.
