IBM i Access for Windows Support for Windows 7

This information provides insight into IBM's current plans and directions and is subject to change or withdrawal without notice.

The V6R1 IBM i Access for Windows client will begin supporting Windows 7 as part of the next V6R1 IBM i Access for Windows service pack, scheduled for release on December 1, 2009.

There are no plans to support the V5R4 IBM i Access for Windows client on Windows 7.

As you plan to adopt Windows 7, please be aware of the following:

  • The AFP Driver and AFP Viewer components in the V6R1 IBM i Access for Windows client will not be supported on Windows 7 until some time in 2010.
  • Windows 7 has a similar security model as Windows Vista and therefore some IBM i Access for Windows functions require elevated authority. Refer to Information APAR II14338 for details on elevated authority aspects of IBM i Access with Vista.

A more complete list of limitations and permanent restrictions will be available when the December V6R1 IBM i Access for Windows client service pack is available.

Note that the V6R1 IBM i Access for Windows client is supported when connecting to V5R3 and later IBM i operating systems.

If you are still at V5R4 IBM i operating system: you can acquire the V6R1 IBM i Access for Windows client while keeping your IBM i operating system at V5R4 by ordering 5722XW1 (IBM i Access Family) refresh feature 2649. This feature is available at no charge to current 5722-XW1 IBM i Access Family customers who have a software maintenance contract
