"IBM’s new System i offerings demonstrate the company’s understanding of and concern for small businesses. By leveraging its own expertise and that of System i business and channel partners including ISVs and resellers, IBM has created innovative, flexible solutions that will satisfy existing System i clients and appeal to a wide range of new small business customers."

"IBM’s new System i Express offerings put the System i on an entirely different competitive footing with Windows servers. By offering user-based pricing for the new models, IBM is enabling customers to compare the value of the System i to Windows in terms that they can clearly understand. Moreover, the attractiveness of these prices puts the acquisition cost for System i in the same league with Windows servers.
When paired with any of the thousands of modernized solutions that it supports, the System i Express will capture the attention of thousands of small and medium-sized businesses. This makes the new offerings a powerful catalyst for reenergizing IBM’s System i business."

"From a security perspective for Microsoft Vista, as for Windows, the security outlook will be more of the same. Even if Microsoft improves security, hackers and virus initiators will adapt their approaches accordingly. “Patch Tuesday” will remain a regular event and may even become more complex and time consuming in the future. Many organizations will continue to make their own arrangements for security by employing third-parties and evaluating other options".
The strength of the IBM System i has always been that it is simple. In small businesses, you sometimes find that the System i is maintained by a part-timer. The software is stable, it doesn’t have to continuously upgraded and patched, and there is very little administrative overhead. It can run for years without a glitch. We have seen companies that installed System i platforms in the 1990s and have barely touched them since. One user summarized it well when he said: “It’s like the office water cooler. It just sits in the corner and does its thing. We forget it’s there.
Look at it the way a small business would. You need a machine. If you buy a photocopier, you have a photocopier. If you buy a Windows server, you have an IT staff. You need to upgrade the software, load the patches, reconfigure the hardware, and fix the glitches on a daily or weekly basis. The appeal of the System i is that the experience of owning one is closer to the photocopier than the Windows server."

"For small and mid sized organizations that are seeking an integrated environment for their Windows, Linux, and i5/OS applications, the System i delivers enhanced operational efficiency, with reduced systems management effort, and is a compelling choice worth investigating.
"The System i offers a solid alternative for small and mid sized organizations that want to support Windows, Linux, and i5/OS applications
but without the traditional challenges of security, reliability, and the high cost of distributed systems."
"For organizations seeking a virtualized server solution on which to consolidate their Windows, Linux, and i5/OS applications, the System i delivers an integrated solution with solid security, reliability, and virtualization credentials."
"Unlike most Windows and Linux platforms deployed today, the System i delivers an integrated, straight forward solution that features ease of management, security, enhanced virtualization, and reliability. With System i, organizations can focus on their core business processes, not on the equipment that supports the business. The System i is a viable alternative for mid market organizations who want to support mixed workloads of Windows,Linux, and i5/OS applications but who do not want to be experts in IT operations."

i5/OS and System i

"The System i5, coupled with the i5/OS, offers customers a great deal in flexibility, manageability, performance and security... i5/OS continues to be viable for current customers that need an industry-specific application that runs on i5/OS....System i5 servers have the reputation of being painless to manage and operate, cost of ownership is generally low, and end-user organizations can devote minimal IT administrators to support them...It is just this simplicity that SMBs, IBM's target market, are saying they want."

System i for Oracle's JD Edwards Edition

"the price performance of this solution nixes the notion that the System i platform is not cost-competitive with x86-based solutions for the lower end of the market....We see this bundled solution as another example of how the small business marketplace need not be ceded strictly to x86-based solutions: a little creativity and partner support can lead to considerable customer value." i520 Collaboration Edition

"The business case for the i520 Collaboration Edition is not simply that it enables lower costs, or delivers functional advantages such as higher levels of availability. It is that these benefits map directly to core business challenges facing small and mid-sized organizations." ITG International Technology Group report, August 2006
