IBM i offers a sophisticated, high performance, automated, integrated storage solution. IBM i Integrated Direct Attach Storage offers high performance and large capacities (up to 387 TBs) through multiple high-speed controllers, jumbo write cache (up to 1.5 GB of compressed write cache per adapter with Auxiliary copy for protection), Read cache up to 1.6 GB per adapter, and 70/141/282 GB, 15 K RPM disk units.
Self-optimizing and self-configuring storage automation is provided by including automatic protection and distribution of data (data spreading) across disk pools offering excellent performance and minimal operator involvement. Storage management is further simplified by extensive graphical interfaces provided by the IBM i Navigator. Integrated IBM i storage offers RAID-5 or RAID 6 data protection as well as complete data and I/O path storage redundancy (bus, adapter, cache, device) which can be provided via Disk Mirroring (similar to RAID-10).
IBM i integrated disk storage utilizes high performance disk drives that are housed in the system unit or HSL-attached I/O towers such as the 5094, 5294 or the 5095/0595.
The combination of high speed disk units, the HSL or new 12X attached I/O drawers/towers and the 5582/5583 PCI-X RAID controllers deliver significant performance throughput enhancements. The PCI-X RAID Controller family (5739/5778) also offers an option that allows users to house the controller in a HSL drawer (5790) or the new 12X drawer (5796) and run cables to a stand alone Storage Drawer (5786/5787), improving floor space efficiencies and flexibility.
Highlights of the PCI-X integrated disk storage family enabled with IBM i include:
- Up to 1.5 GB of write cache and 1.6 GB of Read Cache with compression.
- PCI-X HSL-attached I/O towers (5094 /5294 /5095 /0595)
- Attachment of stand alone storage box (5786/5787) and the ability to use HSL towers/drawers (5096 / 5296 / 5790) or the new 12x drawer (5796) to house controllers.
- With V5R4 the controllers no longer require any I/O Processor, improving PCI-X slot availability.
- Auxiliary Write Cache to maximize protection of the data in cache.
- Low cost 5737/5776 RAID controller, with up to 90MB of write cache for System i 8xx and 5xx models and 5094, 5294 and 5095/0595 HSL-attached I/O towers or 5790 HSL Drawer.
- A non-RAID 5736/5775 PCI-X Tape/Disk controller for System i 8xx and 5xx models.
- 15 K RPM 70 GB, 141 GB and 282 GB disk drives.
