With the release of IBM i V6.1 a 64-bit version of IBM Technology for Java (IT4J) was released to customers. Following this initial release was the release of IT4J 1.4.2 64-bit optimized for SAP. IT4J 1.4.2 64-bit is shipped as option 13 of IBM Developer Kit for Java (5761JV1). IT4J 1.4.2 64-bit is supported by SAP for running NetWeaver 2004 and NetWeaver 7.0 Java workloads. The IT4J Java technology provides many benefits over the Classic technology including improved performance, reduced memory footprint, and increased capacity.
IT4J 1.4.2 64-bit is only available in V6.1. Currently there are no plans to make IT4J 1.4.2 64-bit available in releases prior to V6.1. Only Classic Java technology is available for SAP NetWeaver workloads prior to V6.1. In V6.1 both Classic and IT4J technology are supported for SAP NetWeaver workloads, but IT4J technology is strongly recommended.

The SAP Java Application Server framework was designed to enable the switching of the underlying Java technology with minimal effort. Once the Java technology has been installed on the operating system, configuring the Java application server to use the technology is a matter of making certain configuration changes. To automate the configuration when switching JVMs, SAP has developed a tool named CONFIGJVM that automates switching of JVM technology. This tool is available only on IBM i.
