 IBM Tools to Manage i

The following IBM tools are available to manage your i environment:

  • IBM Systems Director Navigator for i
    Beginning with i .6.1, IBM Systems Director Navigator for i enables management of i from a browser interface. This web-based management tool covers user management, backups, and database management… over 300 tasks in all. IBM Systems Director Navigator for i is the strategic tool for i management and works in concert with IBM Systems Director products that enable multiple and heterogeneous system management.
  • IBM System i Navigator
    System i Navigator is a Windows based tool that offers a powerful graphical interface for managing your IBM i environments. Functionality includes system navigation, configuration, planning capabilities, and online help to guide you through your tasks. System i Navigator makes operation and administration of the system easier and more productive. It also includes Management Central for managing multiple IBM i environments from a central system.
  • Backup Recovery and Media Services (BRMS)
    Keep track of all the data you backed up and where you saved it, backup your Domino servers while they're in use, reduce your backup window with parallel saves, step by step report to help you recover your entire system, backup your spooled files, using an optional graphical user interface plug-in to IBM System i Navigator.
  • High Availability Solutions Manager
    High Availability Solutions Manager (HASM) helps protect critical business applications from outages. Combined with IBM i 6.1, HASM delivers tools for configuring, monitoring, and managing your high availability clustering solution.
  • Job Scheduler
    IBM i users have been improving the efficiency and accuracy of their operations by automating job submissions on their systems with the IBM Advanced Job Scheduler for i.
  • Performance Management
    Performance Management provides the capabilities for customers to understand and manage the performance of their computing environments.
    • The Performance Tools for IBM i product is a set of useful tools for viewing, analyzing, reporting and graphing performance data collected by Collection Services.
    • The Performance Explorer is a data collection and reporting tool that helps performance analysts identify the cause of performance problems that cannot be identified by other tools in the IBM i operating system or by most of the reporting facilities in the Performance Tools for IBM i product.
    • IBM Performance Management for System i (PM for System i) is an integrated, easy to use yet powerful tool easily that provides you with critical information on your system's current utilization characteristics plus helps provide insight on where you are headed, what additional capability your system has and what upgrades you might need for that "next" application.
  • IBM System Manager for i
    IBM System Manager for i provides enterprise management functions for multiple IBM i environments in the area of remote operations or commands, change management, centralized problem management and ECS, and ISV software packaging and PTF support.

The following tools are available to manage the wide variety of servers in your enterprise:

  • IBM Systems Director
    Systems Director is IBM's platform management family that provides IT professionals with the tools they need to better coordinate and manage all of their virtual and physical resources in the data center.
    • IBM Systems Director
      IBM Systems Director, a member of the Systems Director family, is an integrated, easy-to-use suite of tools that provide customers with flexible systems management capabilities to help realize maximum systems availability and lower IT costs.
    • Active Energy Manager
      Allows direct energy monitoring through IBM Systems Director and helps the customer monitor and manage energy consumption to allow better utilization of available energy resources.
  • IBM Tivoli
    A variety of Tivoli software products are available for advanced management of large heterogeneous environments. Tivoli offers solutions for asset, service, application, and security management.

 Consoles for System i

The following console options are available for System i:

  • Operations Console (direct-attached or LAN attached)
    IBM i Operations Console allows a PC to become a local console to your IBM i using a 5250 emulator. The Operations console runs on a PC, as part of the System i Access for Windows.™ The direct-attached operations console can be directly attached to a serial port. The LAN attached operations console can connect the PC to a dedicated LAN adapter card. This is commonly known as a LAN console.
  • HMC
    With the introduction of the POWER5 processor-based systems, the LPAR configuration and management functions are provided by a Hardware Management Console. The HMC performs logical partitioning functions, service functions, and various system management functions. It is a prerequisite to LPAR configuration and Capacity on Demand in any System i environment.
  • Twinax Terminal
    Originally, only one console type was available, a twinax terminal connected to a twinax card. Although the twinax terminal has been withdrawn from the market, the twinax adapter cards remain available on some systems. The terminal and twinax adapter are dedicated to the purpose of providing a 5250 interface between the system and a user. No graphical user interface is available.
