Supported tape devices for IXS and IXA attached Windows servers

The IBM i integration support for the Integrated xSeries® Server (IXS) and System x™ models that are attached to the IBM i platform via an Integrated xSeries Adapter (IXA) allows native Windows® applications to access IBM i tape devices. The specific tape devices that are supported for a particular configuration depend on the version of Windows that is installed on the server and the type of integrated server hardware that is being used.

Note: Tape device drivers must be installed on Windows when running on hardware class 1. The first choice for tape drivers is to use drivers approved by your backup application. If the backup application does not provide or recommend tape drivers, then use tape drivers appropriate for the type of tape drive you use. The Third Party Tape Driver column in the table below provides links to web sites for downloading drivers appropriate for the tape drive. See the tape driver migration page for more information.

The following table shows the IBM i tape devices that are supported for various configurations.

Additional information

IBM i tape devices and tape libraries that are not listed in the table above are not supported with IXS and IXA attached Windows servers.

At this time, none of the tape devices can be used as a tape library in random access mode.   Integrated server hardware classes -- Some tape devices are only supported on specific integrated server hardware configurations. See the table footnotes for details. The two general classes of hardware are as follows:
Hardware class 1:
  · IXA type 2689-001 (feature 1519-100) or 2689-002 (feature 1519-200) with any supported System x model.
