Tape driver migration

With the V5R3 IBM® iSeries™ Integration for Windows Server (5722-WSV) product, additional device-specific capabilities are enabled for System i tape devices that are accessed from Windows® running on an Integrated xSeries® Server (IXS) or System x™ servers that are attached via an Integrated xSeries Adapter (IXA). Some System i™ tape drives will appear differently to Windows than they did in prior releases. The new tape drive names represent the nearest equivalent Windows server tape device name.
Action required

New tape device drivers must be installed on Windows for V5R3 or later.

Prior to this change, IBM i tape drives were accessed from Windows using tape drivers that are packaged with the 5722-WSV product. The tape drivers packaged with the 5722-WSV product are no longer used for many of the IBM i tape drives. Instead, use tape drivers approved by your backup application. If the backup application does not provide or recommend tape drivers, then use tape drivers appropriate for the type of tape drive you use. See the Supported tape devices for IXS and IXA attached Windows servers page for the drivers that are recommended for each tape drive.

Tape drivers are available from:

No special actions are required to install the drivers. The instructions provided by the driver provider should be sufficient.

Using the new tape drivers, the tape drives look identical to drives available for IBM System x™ models. The devices are still listed by type-model number in the device locking/unlocking utility.

After the tape device has been locked once and the server has rebooted, there may appear to be an extra instance of the device in the Removable Storage Manager. This extra instance will have an red 'x' over the device. This behavior is normal, the extra instance may be safely deleted from the Removable Storage Manager. The extra instances of the device should not reappear from that point on.
