Windows on integrated servers

IBM i integration with BladeCenter® and System x™ allows businesses to operate heterogeneous environments that include Intel®-compatible servers running Microsoft® Windows® applications in addition to core business applications on the IBM i platform.

Windows is supported on BladeCenter and System x models that are attached to the IBM i platform via the iSCSI host bus adapter (iSCSI HBA), on System x models that are attached to the IBM i platform via the Integrated xSeries Adapter (IXA) and on the Integrated xSeries Server (IXS).
Windows operating system versions supported

The following Microsoft Windows Server™ operating system versions are supported on various iSCSI, IXA and IXS configurations:

For iSCSI:

64-bit x64 versions (full and core installations):

  • Windows Server 2008 Standard
  • Windows Server 2008 Enterprise
  • Windows Server 2008 Standard without Hyper-V
  • Windows Server 2008 Enterprise without Hyper-V
  • Windows Web Server 2008
32-bit x86 versions:
  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard
  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard plus Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2003 Enterprise plus Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2003 Web plus Service Pack 1 (SP1)

For IXA and IXS

32-bit x86 versions:

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard
  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard
  • Windows Server 2003 Enterprise
  • Windows Server 2003 Web
  • Windows 2000 Server
  • Windows 2000 Advanced server
Note: Terminal Server Services is supported on all of the Windows versions listed above.
Note: IBM i 6.1 plus some PTFs are required in order to run Windows Server 2008 on iSCSI attached servers. See IBM i PTFs for the latest list of PTFs that are required.
The specific Windows operating system versions supported depend on the on the attachment technology (iSCSI, IXA or IXS), the integrated server model and the IBM i release level that is being used. For more information, see:
