IBM i 6.1 (5761-SS1), along with the IBM i Integrated Server Support option (5761-SS1 option 29) and licensed program product Extended Integrated Server Support (5761-LSV) include the following enhancements:
Support for storage space snapshots, which allows a concurrent save of Windows and Linux® data without requiring the system to be shut down or applications ended.
Support for 64 bit Windows Server 2008 on iSCSI attached servers.
VMware® ESX Server 3 running on an iSCSI attached integrated server has been enhanced to support shared storage. Shared storage enables the support of VMware VMotion, VMware HA and VMware DRS.
Support for 64 bit SuSE® LINUX Enterprise Server 10 and Red Hat® Enterprise Linux 5 on iSCSI attached servers.
Support for iSCSI direct connect, which eliminates the requirement for a switch between the IBM i iSCSI target HBA and the System x iSCSI initiator HBA.
Support for file level backup for Linux (iSCSI attached or logical partitions).
Replication of integrated server configuration objects is done using Cluster Administrative Domain.
Enhanced user administration function to optionally specify that user profiles will not be disabled on the Windows operating system when they are disabled on the IBM i operating system.
Integrated server functions are supported within IBM Systems Director Navigator for i (web console).
Addition of initiator CHAP support for iSCSI attached integrated servers, which enhances the security of the iSCSI network.
Support for the IBM BladeCenter S chassis, which can be used with iSCSI attached blade servers. Note: IBM i 5.4 will also support the BladeCenter S chassis.
31 March 2009: Service Processor Manager is provided for discovery and power control of iSCSI attached servers.
The Service Processor Manager function of IBM i Integrated Server Support is a light weight alternative to using an IBM Director server running in your IBM i partition to control iSCSI attached servers. When using Service Processor Manager, most customers do not need to run an IBM Director server in their IBM i partition.
See Configuring i5/OS to use Service Processor Manager in the Information Center for details.
See the IBM i PTFs page for required PTFs.
31 May 2009: Support added for software initiators on Windows servers.
IBM i Integrated Server Support now supports iSCSI software initiators on Windows servers. This support allows Windows servers to use a standard Ethernet NIC as the iSCSI initiator when connecting to IBM i.
See the iSCSI overview page for the Ethernet NICs that are supported as software initiators.
See the BladeCenter and System x models supported with iSCSI page for the server models that are supported with software initiators.
See the IBM i PTFs page for required PTFs.
