Redbook addendum for RHEL 4 installs
 | | |
The IBM® Redbook Implementing Linux® on Integrated xSeries® Solutions for iSeries™ should be referenced when installing Linux on V5R2 or V5R3. See Chapter 2. Planning and installation and Chapter 3. OS/400 Operations in the Redbook.
Note: For i 5.4, see the Linux on an integrated xSeries solution topic in the Information Center rather than using the Redbook and this addendum.
At the time this Redbook was published, only Red Hat® Enterprise Linux 3 (RHEL 3) and SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server 8 (SLES 8) were supported.
For installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL 4), the sections below contain addendums to the corresponding sections in Chapter 2 of the Redbook. These addendums are only for specific text or steps that require modification specific to a RHEL 4 install. Reference the Redbook directly for all other Linux install information not specifically modified below. |

 |
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL 4)
- ES Edition
- AS Edition
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 can only be installed on an Integrated xSeries Adapter-attached System x™ (xSeries) model.
|
If your System x model is supported for integration on a IBM i, you need to check the hardware compatibility lists for RHEL as follows:
- For RHEL
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/hwcert/
On this page you will see a Quick Search text field. Input the word xSeries and click Search. You will see a list of System x models listed in a table with an associated Red Hat version. Click on your specific System x to see details on the certification summary and details.
You may also cross reference the Linux OS support on System x from the IBM Server Proven xSeries NOS Support Information web site
http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/compat/nos/matrix.shtml
with the System x models supported with IXA web page.

6.b. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 media does not contain any utilities for creating a driver diskette. You may use the dd command on a Linux PC to create the diskette. On a Windows® PC, you may use the rawwritewin.exe version 0.4 or above. You can obtain rawwritewin.exe from RHEL 3 media or download it from the following web site 1 :

The server reboots, the configuration files are updated, and then the installation is transferred to the Linux server's console.
You must now complete the installation as described in 2.9.4 Completing the installation of RHEL 4 below. |
 |
 |
To complete the installation of a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 ES or AS (RHEL 4) server:
- The System x model boots from the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 disc 1 located in the System x CD-ROM drive. The Red Hat Enterprise Linux install prompt will appear. Important: You must enter linux dd so that you will be prompted for a driver diskette. If you do not enter linux dd within 1 minute, the installation will continue without prompting you for a diskette and a warning message indicating that no hard drives have been found will appear. To recover, press CTRL-ALT-DELETE to reboot the System x model. The RHEL 4 installation will begin again. You must enter linux dd at the install prompt within 1 minute.
- A dialog will display, Do you have a driver disk? Select Yes. and press Enter.
- If the installation detects multiple devices that could serve as sources for a driver disk, select fd0 and press Enter.
- You will be prompted to insert the driver diskette into the drive. After you insert the driver diskette into the drive, press Enter. There will be a message indicating that it is reading the driver diskette and then loading the ibmixsvs driver.
- You will be prompted to load more driver disks. There is no need to do this. Select No and press Enter.
- The Red Hat graphical interface will start. You may continue through the installation making selections as you prefer however specific selections are required on the Disk Partitioning Setup and Boot Loader Configuration screens.
- When the installation displays the Disk Partitioning Setup screen, you can choose to automatically partition the disk or manually partition the disk using Disk Druid. Unless you are an experienced user, it is recommended that you choose to automatically partition the disk. Important: The install drive (/dev/sdb) FAT partition must not be modified. Otherwise the server will not boot. To use automatic partitioning:
- Select Automatically partition and click Next.
- Two disks are displayed, /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. Remove the check before /dev/sdb so that /dev/sda is the only drive checked and select Remove all partitions on this system. Click on Next, then click Yes on the warning message.
- Review the partition setup on the Disk Setup display. Click Next.
- When the installation displays the Boot Loader Configuration screen, you must make sure that the GRUB boot loader will be installed on /dev/sda. Click Next.
- Continue on with installation making selections as you prefer. When you are done making selections, the installation will prompt you for CD-ROMs. When this phase is finished, the server will reboot.
- After the server reboots, the Setup Agent will guide you through some basic configuration. You may continue through the setup as you prefer however specific selections are required on the Red Hat Login and Why Register screens. The reason is that Red Hat updates can not be applied to your server the until the post-installation instructions in section 2.10 of Redbook have been completed.
- On the Red Hat Login screen, select Tell me why I need to register and provide a Red Hat login and click Next.
- On the Why Register screen, select I can not complete registration at this time. Remind me later and click Next.
- When the setup phases are complete, you will be prompted to sign on to the sever. Please follow the instructions described in section 2.10 Completing the post-installation tasks of the Redbook.
- Once the post-installation instructions are complete, you may apply RHEL 4 updates to your server. Important: After applying RHEL 4 updates, must run ixsupdt before you reboot your server. Details for ixsupdt are listed in the Redbook section 3.11 Maintaining the Linux integration code.
