Linux on integrated servers

IBM i integration with BladeCenter® and System x™ allows businesses to operate heterogeneous environments that include Intel®-compatible servers running Linux® applications in addition to core business applications on the IBM i solution.

IBM i 5.4 or i 6.1 is required in order to run Linux on BladeCenter blade or System x models that are attached to the IBM i platform via an iSCSI host bus adapter (iSCSI HBA).

  • For IBM i 5.4, IBM® has made PTFs available to enable running Linux on iSCSI attached servers. See IBM i PTFs for the latest list of PTFs that are required.
  • For IBM i 6.1, support is included in the base i5/OS products.

Attention: For this IBM i iSCSI solution, System x PCIe iSCSI HBAs are not supported for use with Linux. See the iSCSI host bus adapter (iSCSI HBA) page for PCI-X iSCSI HBAs that are supported for use with Linux.

i5/OS V5R3 or i 5.4 is required in order to run Linux on the Integrated xSeries Server (IXS) and on System x models that are attached to the IBM i platform via the Integrated xSeries Adapter (IXA).

  • For i5/OS V5R3, IBM has made PTFs available to enable running Linux on IXS and IXA attached servers. See IBM i PTFs for the latest list of PTFs that are required.
  • For IBM i 5.4, a new IBM i infrastructure for Linux on integrated servers is provided (in V5R2 and V5R3, the IBM i infrastructure for Windows is used for Linux servers). See IBM i PTFs for the latest list of PTFs that are required.

Attention: A one-time migration of Linux servers that were created on V5R2 or V5R3 is required after upgrading IBM i to i 5.4. See the Migrating Linux servers from V5R2/V5R3 to i 5.4 page for details.

Linux operating system versions tested

The following Linux operating system versions have been tested on various iSCSI, IXA and IXS configurations.

For iSCSI (64-bit x86 operating system versions):

  • SUSE® LINUX Enterprise Server 10 for AMD64 & Intel® EM64T
  • SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 for AMD64 & Intel EM64T
  • Red Hat® Enterprise Linux 5 for x86_64

For IXA (32-bit x86 operating system versions):

  • SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 for x86
  • SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 8 for x86
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Advanced Server (AS) or Enterprise Server (ES) for i386
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Advanced Server (AS) or Enterprise Server (ES) for i386

For IXS (32-bit x86 operating system versions):

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Advanced Server (AS) or Enterprise Server (ES) for i386

The specific Linux operating system versions tested depend on the on the attachment technology (iSCSI, IXA or IXS), the integrated server model and the IBM i release level that is being used. For more information, see:

System x models supported with IXA
IXS system configurations

Attention: The Linux distributors may require special instructions for the installation on supported BladeCenter and System x models. You must follow these special instructions. Any special instructions can be found by checking the hardware certification list as described below.

  • For Red Hat: http://hardware.redhat.com/
On this page you will see a Quick Search text field. Input your System x or BladeCenter model and click Search. You will see the associated Red Hat Enterprise Linux version listed. Click on your specific model to see details on the certification summary and details. In the details under Platform, i386 means 32-bit and x86_64 means 64-bit version of the operating system.

  • For SUSE: http://developer.novell.com/yessearch/Search.jsp
On this page input the following and click Search.
Keywords: Input your BladeCenter or System x model
    Company: IBM
Product: SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 8 for x86 or
SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 for x86 or
SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 for AMD64 & Intel EM64T or
SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 10 for AMD64 & Intel EM64T
The x86 means 32-bit and the AMD64 & Intel EM64T means 64-bit version of the operating system.
Your model should be listed. Click on the Bulletin number to see details on configurations and requirements for install.

Linux kernel versions tested on IXS/IXA
Various Linux kernel versions have been tested with integrated IXS/IXA servers. See the Linux kernels tested on IXS/IXA page for details.
