Description

This course teaches you about the 4690 Java classes that are available with 4690 OS Version 3 Release 2, gives some programming information about 4690 OS for Java programmers who may not be familiar with 4690 OS, and shows how to configure 4690 OS to execute Java applications (which may be helpful to programmers, as well as those who have the corporate responsibility for maintaining 4690 OS stores). The course features 4690 Java coding exercises and examples.

Audience

Programmers responsible for writing Java applications that will run on POS systems utilizing 4690 OS Version 3 Release 2. This includes complete Java applications that run on the controller (server) or Java applications that enhance current IBM POS applications (such as the Supermarket Application, SurePOS ACE, General Sales Application, or Chain Drug Sales Application) via user exits, or in the case of the terminal sales application, via use of the Java I/O processor.

Those non programmers who have the responsibility to maintain a retailer's 4690 OS V3 POS systems can also benefit from the modules that show how to configure and run Java applications on 4690 OS V3 systems.

Modules
  • Configuring 4690 OS for Java
  • Configuring your development environment
  • Testing your configurations
  • Features and limitations
  • 4690 Java classes
  • Terminal Applications
  • Controller Applications

This course has exercises, which require both a Java development system and a 4690 OS V2 system to complete. (You could take the course without doing the exercises, but doing the exercises is highly recommended.)

Objectives

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Set up your Java development system (a non-4690 OS system) to utilize 4690 classes
  • Configure 4690 OS V2 systems to execute Java applications in both the controller (server) and terminal (client)
  • Create 4690 OS Java applications which utilize 4690 classes and that run on either the controller or the terminal. These Java applications may include applications that enhance current IBM POS applications (such as the Supermarket Application, SurePOS ACE, General Sales Application, or Chain Drug Sales Application) via user exists in those applications. (A Java GUI written for the terminal sales application is also possible, but it does require good Java skills and a thorough understanding of the I/O processor used by IBM's 4690 POS applicaitons.)
