IBM has taken the next step in storage virtualization by merging the best in file system performance, scalability and flexibility. IBM has integrated key features of IBM TotalStorage® SAN File System (SFS) into IBM General Parallel File System™ (GPFS™). GPFS is well known for its unmatched scalability and leadership in file system performance, and it is now IBM's premier storage virtualization solution.
The goal of this paper is to introduce GPFS, at a high level, and to compare GPFS functionality and architecture to SFS by highlighting the similarities and differences between GPFS and SFS.
This paper is intended to help those who are familiar with SFS and are looking for information on GPFS. It answers many questions including: What is GPFS? How is GPFS similar to SFS? How do they differ? This paper starts by reviewing high level architecture differences then compares some more detailed features. For a more complete overview of GPFS, please see the IBM white paper "An Introduction to GPFS".
