The mainframe continues to evolve while holding true to our core strengths of the platform. zEnterprise is driving new relevance and expanding its role to support smarter computing. Ongoing enhancements with zEnterprise demonstrates our commitment to innovation in both mainframe technologies and in the delivery of expanded hybrid computing capabilities that drive business value.
In July 2011, IBM significantly enhanced the IBM zEnterprise System. Highlights of this announcement include:
Introducing a new member of the family
The IBM zEnterprise 114 (z114) brings the unique capabilities of the hybrid computing model to smaller and mid-sized enterprises by delivering:
- A workload optimized system designed to integrate and manage multi-tier workloads easily and efficiently.
- An entry level mainframe with increased flexibility, extreme granularity and significantly lower costs.
- Improvements in packaging, performance and total system scalability with extensive growth options designed for mid-sized clients.
zBX now supports System x blades
The zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX) has been enhanced with support for System x blades running the Linux operating system and, in the near future, Windows.1

Enhancements to the zEnterprise
A number of additional enhancements for the zEnterprise have been made which strengthen existing capabilities in areas such as I/O performance, clustering and security. These new enhancements apply to both the existing z196 and the new z114.
In the future
IBM is issuing a new statement of direction that outlines a set of Application Program Interfaces (APIs) for the Unified Resource Manager designed to increase the flexibility in deploying and managing the zEnterprise System.1
IBM continues to ready the market for the addition of support to run Microsoft Windows on System x blades within the zBX in the near future.1
