Midsized businesses are the engines of a Smarter Planet
Today, we are in the midst of a technology shift driving growth and innovation. Cloud, analytics, social business, and mobile solutions aren’t simply remaking computing, they are remaking business. These new applications are driving the huge growth in data volumes and variety, and the need for systems with the compute intensive performance to process it. This new era represents an opportunity for midsized companies to reshape the value they deliver, but cost, complexity and risk are standing in the way. So how can midsized companies make sure they are ready now for what’s next?
At IBM, we believe there’s an answer - we call it Smarter Computing - the IT infrastructure that enables the opportunities presented on a smarter planet. It’s a strategy that leverages virtualisation and cloud to speed time to market and improve efficiency, that unlocks the power of data through business analytics to deliver faster and more actionable insights, and secures critical information to reduce risk and help business enhance their compliance policies.
IBM Power Systems exemplifies Smarter Computing by providing a powerful, efficient, and secure backbone for the critical operations of today’s businesses of all sizes. The broad portfolio of Power Systems entry server solutions provides ample choices for midsized companies that need to expand their operations while controlling costs and reducing time to value. And our latest systems, enhanced with the POWER7+ processor, offer better performance, higher energy efficiency, and more affordable pricing than ever before.
Cloud ready - dynamic efficiency
More than 70 percent of the typical IT budget is tied up in operations and maintenance. For midsized companies efficiency is about keeping it simple, avoiding complexity, and leveraging virtualisation and cloud to maximise the productivity of their limited skilled resources.
Cloud server technologies can help improve IT operational efficiency to enable companies to invest in business innovation. PowerVM virtualisation provides intelligent, dynamic resource allocation for rapid response to workload demands, enabling consistent performance and high efficiency for all your workloads.
Data ready - business analytics
As midsized businesses react to the explosive growth of data, they need to store it, secure it and, most importantly, understand it and extract actionable insight from it. Midsize companies are using business analytics as a key tool to differentiate their client experience from larger competitors.
IBM Power Systems are designed for the compute intensive performance demands of database and business analytics workloads, enabling faster business insights to be realised from processing structured databases and unstructured text data in real time.
Security ready - enhanced compliance
Midsize companies must deal with the security challenges associated with rapid growth. With the high costs of security incidents, they must both manage risk and control costs of compliance with industry mandates. Midsized businesses face potentially devastating disruptions from security incidents and client data exposures.
The increasing prevalence of social, mobile, virtualisation and cloud technologies present a profound security challenge. IBM Power Systems help companies enhance their security and compliance practices with policy-based PowerSC software to simplify security and lower compliance costs.
Delivered with a superior client experience
Midsized businesses that rely on IBM Power Systems entry servers don’t just value leading technology and applications. They value the exceptional client experience that IBM and IBM Business Partners provide throughout the business solution lifecycle that helps them drive rapid and lasting business value.
Clients can gain valuable insights and advice from IBM Business Partners to help them select the right servers and storage to fit their industry application of choice. They also can take advantage of simple, pre-configured solutions editions to get a fast start with deploying their industry application solution.
The proven migration methodologies and expertise of the IBM Migration Factory (MF) and IBM Business Partners can help midsized companies cut the time to move a database or application from x86 commodity servers.
The IBM Power Systems Workload Centre of Competency is designed to help clients of all sizes with a wide range of projects, including optimising industry solutions to run on Power Systems, proof of concept studies, performance analysis and availability studies.
Clients can also tap into the deep expertise of IBM Business Partners and IBM Lab Services teams for a broad range of infrastructure design, implementation, management and optimisation projects. IBM Power Systems servers even ‘call home’ if they detect an issue, so a potential problem may be fixed before it occurs.
Integrated and easy-to-deploy
A totally integrated approach to the design, development, and testing of each and every IBM Power Systems entry server, blade or compute node ensures that they are simple to deploy and highly reliable as a foundation for midsized business solutions. IBM Power Systems offers thousands of popular industry applications from independent software vendors (ISVs) running on a choice of AIX, IBM i and Linux operating systems. IBM has a full range of affordable Power Systems servers, compute nodes and blades for mid-sized companies, each of which delivers leadership compute intensive performance and scalability in its class.
Express Editions of Power Systems software are specifically packaged with the affordable price and features needed for midsized businesses. Designed and optimised specifically for Power Systems, IBM’s offerings include IBM PowerVM virtualisation software, IBM PowerHA software for high availability (HA), and PowerSC software for security and compliance. IBM’s integrated approach to developing the systems and software together enables high system utilisation, high resiliency and simplified management.
Built on POWER, virtualised with PowerVM
POWER processors provide the foundation for designing solutions for midsized businesses that combine both traditional transaction processing and compute intensive workloads like web, analytics, mobile and social applications. To achieve maximum performance, POWER processor-based systems are designed with technologies that enable the system to tune automatically to specific industry workloads. For example, Active Memory Expansion helps reduce memory costs by enabling physical memory to be logically expanded up to 100 percent for some workloads – such as SAP.
Midsized businesses are leveraging virtualisation and cloud technologies to reduce costs and maximise their IT infrastructure investments. PowerVM virtualisation is designed and optimised specifically for the POWER processor and enables trusted and scalable virtualisation of workloads based on AIX, IBM i and Linux.
The latest POWER7+ processor technology is designed with a new capability that monitors PowerVM virtual workloads for best processor and memory placement and performance. PowerVM also offers Micro-Partitioning with the ability to run up to 20 partitions per POWER7+ processor core, and dynamically move processor, memory, and input/output (I/O) resources between partitions to support changing workload requirements. PowerVM Live Partition Mobility enables active partitions to be moved between servers, virtually eliminating application downtime for planned systems maintenance. Live partition mobility can also be used to migrate workloads between POWER6, POWER7 and POWER7+ processor-based servers without an application outage.
