FAQ: What are the supported FICON Director and Channel Extender Configurations for the TS7700?

Answer to this FAQ:

The table below is the matrix of FICON directors and switches supported with the TS7700.
  • Support is for use between the host and the TS7700.
  • 1 level of cascading (2 directors) is supported.
  • No intermix of vendors.
  • Maximum distance supported is 100km (62 miles) for all vendors/models (3000 miles for FICON accelerators - see notes below table).
  • Switches must be set to Auto-Negotiate.
  • Contact vendors to determine which products are appropriate for use with channel extenders.
  • Listing in this matrix is not intended to extend any support listed in other IBM letters or publications.

Note: 'FTA' refers to Ficon Tape Acceleration feature.

Notes:

1.Support for Brocade switches: 6510, DCX, DCX-4S, 5100 and 5300 as well as Cisco switches: 9506, 9509, 9513 and MDS 9710 is provided based on qualification performed by System Z and DS8K products.
2. Consult FICON support page to verify Z system support with specific codes(https://www-304.ibm.com/servers/resourcelink/lib03020.nsf/pages/switchesAndDirectorsQualifiedForIbmSystemZRFiconRAndFcpChannels?OpenDocument)

BROCADE IP Extension is supported only with Brocade 7840 with code 7.4.0a and with code 833.0.x installed in TS7700.
When IP Extension traffic volume is high, the TS7700 may back pressure the LAN interface of the Brocade 7840 via Ethernet pause.
The target side 7840 will go into flow control. While the 7840 is under flow control, this can cause the automated PINGs to be lost at TS7700 side.
This can result in an alert raised by the local TS7700 indicating that cluster in the GRID is lost at the remote end. In these cases the data load is unaffected and this error should be ignored. The GRID automated ping check can be disable on the TS7700 to avoid this alert.
To disable automatic ping go to "SMIT -> System Checkout Menus -> System Checkout Menus -> System Checkout Utility Menus -> Enable/Disable Pings on the Grid Network" and select "disable".

FICON Tape Acceleration (FTA) requires special configuration, which requires the vendor company to be involved with trouble-shooting or setting up the system. The host IOCP and switch must have the same definitions. Only one path per customer device is able to be used due to data loss problems. The switch must also have customized settings, which are unique to FTA.
Problems can range from data loss to path problems on the host if the system is not configured properly.
  • Brocade Accelerator for FICON:
1. Emulation support for Tape Pipelining for TS7700 is supported on models:
1.1. 2005-R18 (7500), the upgraded 2005-R04 (7500E) and FR4-18i blade for the 2109-M48 (48000) and 2499-384 (SAN768B) (DCX) running microcode level of FOS 6.1.1a, 6.4.0c or 6.4.2a.
1.2. 2498-R06 (7800, SAN06B-R) running microcode level FOS 6.4.0c or 6.4.2a.
1.3. 2498-R42 (7840) running microcode level FOS 7.3.0b1.
2. Use of FOS 6.4.0c or higher has a co-requisite Channel Fix for 2097/2098 zSeries models which is included in Driver 79F Bundle 37a.
3. Up to 3000 miles distance is supported
  • Cisco Ficon Tape Accelerator
1. The MDS9506, 9509 and 9513 with "18+4" cards and the MDS9222i may use FTA with Cisco microcode 4.2.7b or 5.2.2 and TS7700 microcode 8.7.0.x and higher.
2. Up to 3000 miles distance is supported

NOTE:
When canceling jobs on the host and while using Brocade channel extenders, it is possible that some of the devices and jobs that were doing emulation (up to 8 per EDGE/USD) have a chance of hanging due to a missed selective reset. To work around this issue, the MIH values for the library will need to be set to 10 seconds. After the 2nd selective reset comes down and resets the devices, the MIH value can be set back to 45 minutes and the devices/library will be usable. This problem has been observed on older 2064 hosts only.
