| FAQ: What are the supported FICON Director and Channel Extender Configurations for the TS7740? |
Answer to this FAQ:
The table below is the matrix of FICON directors and switches supported with the TS7700.
- Support is for use between the host and the TS7700
- 1 level of cascading (2 directors) is supported
- No intermix of vendors
- Maximum distance supported is 100km (62 miles) for all vendors/models (3000 miles for FICON accelerators - see notes below table)
- Contact vendors to determine which products are appropriate for use with channel extenders
- Listing in this matrix is not intended to extend any support listed in other IBM letters or publications.
Note: 'FTA' refers to Ficon Tape Acceleration feature.

FICON Tape Acceleration (FTA) requires special configuration, which requires the vendor company to be involved with trouble-shooting or setting up the system. The host IOCP and switch must have the same definitions. The switch must also have customized settings, which are unique to FTA. Problems can range from data loss to path problems on the host if the system is not configured properly.
- Brocade Accelerator for FICON:
1. Emulation support for Tape Pipelining for TS7700 is supported on models 2005-R18 (7500), upgraded 2005-R04 (7500E) and FR4-18i blade for the 2109-M48 (48000) and 2499-384 (SAN768B) (DCX) running a supported microcode level of FOS 6.1.1a, 6.4.0c or 6.4.2a and for the 2498-R06(7800, SAN06B-R) running FOS 6.4.0c or 6.4.2a.
2. Use of FOS 6.4.0c or higher has a co-requisite Channel Fix for 2097/2098 zSeries models which is included in Driver 79F Bundle 37a.
3. Up to 3000 miles distance is supported
- Cisco Ficon Tape Accelerator
1. The MDS9506, 9509 and 9513 with "18+4" cards and the MDS9222i may use FTA with Cisco microcode 4.2.7b or 5.2.2 and TS7700 microcode 8.7.0.x and higher.
2. Up to 3000 miles distance is supported
The table below is the matrix of Ficon Channel Extenders supported with the TS7700. Support is for use between the host and the TS7700.

NOTE: When canceling jobs on the host and while using Brocade channel extenders, it is possible that some of the devices and jobs that were doing emulation (up to 8 per EDGE/USD) have a chance of hanging due to a missed selective reset. To work around this issue, the MIH values for the library will need to be set to 10 seconds. After the 2nd selective reset comes down and resets the devices, the MIH value can be set back to 45 minutes and the devices/library will be usable. This problem has been observed on older 2064 hosts only.

05/13/13 - Fixed typo with previous change. Mistakenly crossed out 6.0.4c instead of 6.0.4a for the Brocade DCX IBM 2499-384.
05/07/13 - Removed support for microcode level 6.0.4a on Brocade DCX IBM 2499-384 and Brocade DCX-4S IBM 2499-192. The change is indicated by a strike through of the microcode level. (Jim Fisher)
