Abstract: The IBM® Virtual Client Solution (VCS) provides an environment where traditional desktops are replaced by virtual clients. A virtual client is essentially an image of a desktop computer (a virtual desktop) stored on a central server. The image of the virtual desktop is accessed through a remote connection from a client device (for example, a thin client or another desktop PC), but otherwise behaves almost identically to a desktop PC.
A virtual desktop can be assigned to a single, exclusive user, or it may belong to a pool of images available to users on a first-come, first-serve basis. Both types of images—private and pool—can be used within the same infrastructure.
The IBM Center for Microsoft® Technologies (ICMT) is located in Kirkland, Washington, six miles west of the Microsoft campus and a short distance across Lake Washington from Seattle. The facility opened in 1993 and has become an integral part of IBM's Systems and Technology Group, with over 130 software engineers, test and quality specialists, and enterprise solutions staff. The primary focus of the ICMT staff is adapting Microsoft software to IBM products, as well as providing worldwide level-3 technical support for Microsoft and VMware® products on IBM hardware.
Project Red Hook is the name for the implementation of IBM VCS to 25 ICMT users. |
