Abstract: Shared Memory Communication (SMC) is the latest IBM Z network feature with potential benefits of lowering CPU cost and network latency. SMC has been available on z/OS, and recently is also available for Linux on Z. Applications running on z/OS and Linux on Z may potentially benefit by deploying SMC connection. By switching from HiperSockets to SMC (Direct) for the SAP Banking application, the utilization of the general processors for the z/OS database server can decrease significantly, which can potentially lower license cost.
