Abstract: IBM builds, tests, and publishes reference configurations and performance metrics to provide clients with guidelines for sizing their Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environments. This document highlights the IBM Flex System x240 Compute Node and IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node and how they can be used as the foundation for your Exchange 2010 infrastructure.
To demonstrate the performance of the x240 Compute Node and Flex V7000 Storage Node, 9,000 mail users are hosted on the x240 with the mailbox databases residing on the Flex V7000. Multiple tests are run to validate both the storage and server running at that workload. The performance metrics are then used to design a highly available reference architecture for a fictitious organization with 30,000 employees.
IBM has tested and is releasing this configuration, which is built using these key components:
• IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node
• IBM Flex System x240 Compute Node
• Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
• Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP1
